Last post for tonight - This was a fun experiment that exceeded my expectations. This brush was created by taking two end-grain pieces of Andiroba and gluing them up back to back. Most of my brushes are solid blocks of wood, and I let the wood tell me what shape it wants, wabi-sabi style. This one I attempted to turn the wood in a way that it wasn't meant to....and it didn't blow up in my face! The result is this amazing cats eye like color shifting as the light hits the end-grain. I posted a crummy video of it last week - it simply doesn't do it justice. I spent extra time sanding and finishing this one to keep it bright and reflective; I wouldn't want to hide this light show. Note: this is a very large brush handle - almost a full 2" across and 3" long. I took very little wood out as I turned it. This is great for big hands!

More of the flamed maple. I love how the light shifts on the figuring in the grain. This is my twist on the classic paintbrush shaped shaving handle. Too many shave brushes these days are too simple, and made for people with small hands. I try to make my brushes where they can be gripped many different ways; if I have the wood-stock, I'll make really large brushes for those of you with big bear paws for hands. :)

This is probably my favorite shave brush, and one I'm seriously considering keeping for myself. This one started the Multi-Grip style I like. You can hold it by the ball at the bottom, in the middle, or up at the lightsaber like top. There is some very subtle texturing on some of the rings, almost like the edge of a quarter. I don't have much of this rare American Chestnut, it's just hard to get! - so the pricing on this one is a little more.

Heat Colored Figured Maple handle $40

This is an interesting wood. It's a lightly figured maple that is somehow cooked to give it a darker color. It looks like a very consistent light cherry...but smells like a campfire when turning it on the lathe. This is sort of a multi-grip shape which you'll see turns up in my work a lot. I find that when I use shave brushes I want to hold them differently if I'm soaping it up, vs building lather on my face, or just applying lather. I also like having a ledge to place my fingers for mashing the brush to build up a nice lather - so this is the result.

I noticed most of my shave handles were dark woods. I love the rich, dark grains. But needed to lighten things up a bit. This figured maple brush is one of several lighter colored brushes I've made to balance things out. :) This has a nice grain that flashes in the light - I hope to make some videos to highlight this wood at a later date.

This shave handle represents the Wabi-sabi aesthetic - in that imperfections are part of the art. I love this aesthetic, and intend to include it in as much of my work as I can. When I start turning a shave brush - I have a shape in mind based on the patterns in the grain of the wood. But I find that as I start turning, the wood tells me what the final product looks like. In this handle I chose to highlight the burl/knot by putting it towards the brush side. The cracks are stabilized with acrylic and sealed. This is a beautiful piece of walnut, so I kept the shape simple and let the dark wood do the talking. :)

Note: this is a very large brush handle at over 3" long. Great for guys with big hands!

How about some Razor handles?
I've been trying out hardware from a few different vendors. I'm really picky, and might actually have to have some hardware custom made. I think more can be done to make the hardware more universal and modern. In the mean time, here are some razor handles that I really like.
