Reshaping a Curly Cut by Kandace
Kandace C. Cummings | Boston Curl Expert & Specialist

Growing out a pixie? Here's why I didn't reach for the shears first.

This client hadn't had a professional cut in about two years. She was growing out a short pixie that started as a straight cut, and she and her mom (who has a cosmetology background) had been trimming it at home. Eventually it got to the point where she needed a fresh set of eyes.

The shape wasn't far off. I could see exactly what she was going for. The real question was what her curls would do once they were defined and shrinkage kicked in, because that's where overcutting happens.

So I started with a dusting to clean up every end. Best case, that alone would have been enough. Then I washed and set her with mousse, which is perfect for her low porosity hair since it keeps things light and gives her tons of volume.

Once she was dry and defined, her hair told me everything. I could see which curls were still sticking out and where the shape needed work.

There was some length in the back I planned to keep, but once it was dry, it didn't need to stay, so I took that too.

The result is a shape that should carry her six to nine months while she keeps growing. My goal is to see her when she's truly ready for a reshape, not a day sooner.
Swipe to see the shape from every angle. Rounded on top, tapered at the nape, and room to keep growing.

Cut dry. Cut defined.

Cut what the curls actually need.

Dark Chocolate Highlights by Kandace

I love working with brunettes who want to stay natural — but elevated.

Not every transformation needs to be blonde. Sometimes the goal is richer chocolate tones, espresso depth, and soft brunette ribbons that create movement without overpowering your base.
For curly hair especially, subtle brown dimension enhances the pattern instead of competing with it.

The added contrast creates visual fullness, light reflection, and shape — while still feeling effortless and refined.

When done intentionally, brunette highlights:
• Add movement without harsh contrast
• Grow out softer and more seamless
• Preserve richness and depth
• Elevate your natural tone instead of replacing it

Natural doesn’t mean flat. Natural can still feel polished, dimensional, and custom.

If you’ve been wanting more depth without going lighter, this is your sign.

Save this for inspiration and bring it to your consultation — or book your dimensional brunette appointment at anitakurl.com 🤎

Andrew's Curly Cut by Kandace

I want to share about one of my wonderful clients, Andrew. Andrew is a wonderful client who is passionate about his curls. He came to me looking for a haircut, style, and lessons on how to care for his curls.

During our appointment, we discussed Andrew's hair care routine and goals. I recommended that we start with a simple shampoo plan and gradually explore other options as his appointments progress.

I am confident that I can help Andrew achieve his hair goals. I am a curl specialist with many years of experience, and I am passionate about helping my clients achieve their best curls. This job isn't easy, but when I see clients like Andrew feel good, it's well worth it.

I'm looking forward to seeing and serving you.

2C - 3A Curl Cut by Kandace

🍃Curls:
Very loose curls. I thought her hair was straight when she came in and had no idea what her curl potential was.

🍃 Desire:
This beautiful clients came in and wanted to go a little bit shorter with a one length Curly Bob that would remove all the split ends, give her the shape that she was looking for, and remove any layers that were previously cut into her hair.

🍃Product:
She was looking for a good product that would also help tighten her curls. She was using Innersense's I Create Hold, had just run out of this, so I was so excited to be able to present Innersense Create Curl Memory because it would give her a nice, strong hold without the stiffness and a ton of flexibility.

Have you tried I Create Curl Memory?
