It’s dark. It’s late. I’m coming home from another birth, body tired, heart full. This is another day in the life of a homebirth midwife. The hours are unpredictable, and the work can be exhausting. It asks for patience, skill, vigilance, and a steady presence, sometimes long into the night.
And then I leave a home where a family has welcomed new life, carrying gratitude for the trust they placed in me and my practice. What a blessing to witness their strength, support their choices, and be invited into such a sacred moment.
After nearly 30 years, this work still moves me. Tonight, I’m grateful for another family served and ready for the rest that allows me to keep serving with love.
A glimpse into the life of a home birth midwife. We travel roads and navigate routes that many people never see..sometimes in darkness, heavy rain, freezing temperatures, or icy conditions, all to reach families when birth calls.
On this particular day, earlier in the day , it was pouring rain, making the journey even more challenging. But this is part of who we are and what we do. We go where we are needed to provide the compassionate, respectful care that every birthing person deserves.
The road isn’t always easy, but the calling is always worth it. This is the journey behind the birth.
Today would have been my mother’s birthday—her heavenly birthday—and I am deeply grieving her absence.
I am holding a plethora of emotions: love, sadness, frustration, pain, and the profound challenge of learning how to live without her. Sometimes grief is so overwhelming that I cannot find the words to articulate it. But I have learned that grief must be allowed to express itself in whatever way it needs to.
Today, sharing these memories is part of how I am releasing, remembering, and making my way through this difficult day. Thank you for holding space for me and allowing me to share my grief, my love, and my mother’s memory.
Women carry generations of birthing wisdom within them.
In this restored 2015 interview, Grand Warrior Midwife Sakina O’Uhuru reminds women that the knowledge of how to give birth is deeply rooted within them—passed down through their mothers, grandmothers, and ancestors.
This archival recording features Sakina’s original voice and words.

Did you know? 🤎
Decades of research show that midwife-led continuity of care — one trusted midwife and team walking with you from pregnancy through birth — is linked to fewer epidurals, fewer episiotomies, fewer instrumental births, and fewer preterm births. (Cochrane review of 15 trials and 17,000+ families.)
Why? Because relationship is medicine. When you are known, heard, and supported, birth changes.
