SQUALANE ≠ SQUALENE

Have you ever seen squalane on a skincare label and wondered what it actually is?

Or noticed squalene and thought, “Wait…isn’t that the same thing?”

They’re related—but they’re not exactly the same.

Squalene is something our skin naturally makes. It’s found in sebum, the natural oils our skin produces to help keep it soft and protected.

As we age, our skin naturally produces less squalene.

Squalane is the more stable form of squalene used in skincare. It’s created through a process called hydrogenation, which simply means making the ingredient more stable so it can be used in skincare products without breaking down as easily.

And here’s the part I think is really interesting:

Squalane is an emollient—a skincare ingredient that helps soften and smooth the skin. It can also help reduce moisture loss, helping skin feel comfortable, soft, and moisturized.

Not quite. And understanding the difference can help you make more informed choices about what you put on your skin.
