PIE is the redness caused by your body’s inflammatory response to trauma (like acne!) to the skin. It’s often a frustrating part of the healing process.

The degree to which your skin will develop PIE depends on several factors:

▪️PIE is more common in people with fairer skin types. Darker skin is more likely to experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a condition in which dark brown or grey spots occur due to an increase in melanin production. We’ll talk more about this in a later post!

▪️Picking or squeezing your acne can make PIE worse and prolong the healing process, more trauma = more PIE

‼️ Sun protection is imperative! UV exposure can worsen PlE, as well as lengthen its duration

PIE can stick around for up to 6 months, but there are ways to speed up the fading process!

Inflamed Acne - Red, swollen, and often painful. These are active breakouts caused by bacteria, clogged pores, and inflammation.

Non-Inflamed Acne - Whiteheads and blackheads (aka comedones). These aren’t red or swollen but are still clogged pores that can become inflamed if not treated.

PIE (Post-Inflammatory Erythema) - Those lingering red or pink marks left behind after a breakout heals. These aren’t scars but discoloration caused by residual inflammation. They fade over time with the right treatments and home care products.
