The mask you’ll reach for in September is probably the wrong one.

First, what a mask actually is: a stronger dose of something your routine already does, held against the skin for longer. That’s the whole mechanism. It can’t do what your routine can’t. It just does it more, and faster.

Four types, four jobs:
Clay absorbs oil, for congestion. Cream puts water back, for skin that feels tight. Enzyme loosens dead cells, for dullness and texture. Gel calms things down, for redness and reactivity.

Here’s the September problem. Skin after summer feels congested, so everyone reaches for clay. But post-summer skin is usually dehydrated and barrier-compromised rather than genuinely oily, and clay strips what little is left. Start with cream or gel. The clay can wait until the barrier is back.

And five things worth knowing:
apply to clean, slightly damp skin · don’t let clay dry and crack, that tightness isn’t it working · longer isn’t stronger · once or twice a week is enough · always moisturise after, even the hydrating ones.

Most people own the right mask already and are using it for the wrong problem. If you’re not sure which yours is, a skin check-in is fifteen minutes and no treatment.

"Fall reset" usually means buying things. It should mean removing them.

Every September the same advice circulates: overhaul your routine for the new season. New serum, new acid, new everything, starting Monday.

That isn't a reset. That's a shopping list.

A real reset is subtraction. After a summer of sun, heat and air conditioning, most skin doesn't need more actives. It needs fewer, for a few weeks, while the barrier recovers.

Take out, for two or three weeks: anything that tingles or stings · scrubs and acids beyond twice a week · any product you started recently and can't actually vouch for.

Keep: a gentle cleanser · a moisturiser that genuinely feels sufficient · sunscreen daily, because UV in October is lower, not absent.

You'll know the barrier has recovered when skin stops feeling tight after cleansing and things stop stinging.

Then add one thing. Give it two weeks. Then the next. It takes about six weeks to rebuild a full routine that way, which is still faster than starting over in November because everything went wrong in October.

The season is long. You have until December.

If you're not sure what's worth keeping, a skin check-in is fifteen minutes, no treatment, and an honest answer either way.

No, dermaplaning doesn’t make your hair grow back thicker.

It’s the question I’m asked most, and the reason a lot of people never book it. So here’s the actual mechanism.

The fine hair on your face is vellus hair. It’s structurally different from the coarse terminal hair on your scalp or brows. Cutting it doesn’t change the follicle, the colour, or the rate it grows. It can feel blunter for a few days, because a cut end is blunt rather than tapered. That’s the whole of it.

What dermaplaning actually does is remove dead surface cells along with that hair, using a sterile single-use blade. Skin looks brighter, makeup sits flatter, and whatever you apply afterwards actually reaches the skin.

Worth doing: have it done professionally · stop retinoids about five days before · arrive with clean skin · wear sunscreen daily afterwards · space it roughly four weeks apart.

Worth avoiding: doing it over active breakouts or inflamed skin · exfoliating for three days afterwards · booking it the same day as something important, the first time · and never reuse or share a blade.

Some skin shouldn’t be dermaplaned at all, and I’d rather say so than take the booking. If you’re not sure, a skin check-in is fifteen minutes and no treatment.

Exfoliating harder won't shift summer pigmentation. It can make it darker.

Every September people notice uneven tone and reach for the strongest scrub or acid they own. It's a reasonable instinct, and it usually backfires for two reasons.

The first is depth. The pigment you're seeing sits below the surface layers that exfoliation reaches. Buffing the top isn't getting near it.

The second matters more. Aggressive exfoliation causes inflammation, and inflammation is one of the things that triggers melanin production in the first place. So you can genuinely darken what you're trying to lighten. That risk is higher in deeper skin tones, and it's the most common way a good intention leaves a mark that lasts months.

What actually works is slower and duller. A barrier that isn't compromised. Gentle, consistent turnover rather than intense occasional exfoliation. Daily sunscreen, because UV re-triggers pigment faster than anything corrects it. And professional treatment timed for autumn, while UV is dropping.

Twice a week is plenty. If products have started to sting, that's the sign to stop entirely for two weeks.

If you're not sure whether what you're seeing is surface dullness or actual pigment, that's a ten-minute answer in person. A skin check-in is fifteen minutes, no treatment, and an honest read either way.

Your September skincare routine is probably starting in the wrong place.

Every year people come back from summer with a bag of new products and a plan to start all of it on Monday. The instinct is right. The order is wrong.

After a summer of sun, heat, chlorine and air conditioning, most skin arrives in September with a damaged skin barrier. Correcting on a compromised barrier makes everything worse: products sting, redness climbs, and you conclude your skin has turned sensitive when it's actually just injured.

So repair before you correct. Two or three weeks of a gentle cleanser, a proper moisturiser, sunscreen, and nothing that tingles. It will feel like nothing is happening. It's the part that makes everything after it work.

You'll know you're ready when skin stops feeling tight after cleansing and things stop stinging.

Then add one thing. Give it two weeks. Then the next.

Not sure whether your barrier is damaged or your skin is just dry? That's a hard call to make about your own face, and getting it wrong costs you a season. A skin check-in is fifteen minutes, no treatment, and an honest answer either way.

Your skin is communicating with you long before it asks for help.

A little more sensitivity than usual. A feeling of tightness. Changes in texture. Unexpected congestion.

These aren't problems to ignore or rush to "fix." They're often your skin's way of telling you that something has changed.

The goal isn't to react to every signal. It's to understand what your skin is trying to communicate.

At Esthetique Skin, we believe thoughtful observation comes before treatment. By looking beyond what's visible, we can create a personalized plan that supports your skin with intention, not assumptions.

Healthy skin begins with listening.

Save this post for your next skin check-in, and remember: the best skincare decisions start with understanding, not guessing ✨
