Diversity is a fact. Inclusion is an act.
Yesterday, I volunteered at my son Byron's school for Diverse Abilities Day, leading the "Speech Impairment" table.
Byron is nonverbal, has ARFID, and is on the spectrum, so this was deeply personal.
I helped kids imagine life without being able to say "Hi," "I'm hungry," or "I love you, Mom." I showed them sign language, taught them about apraxia of speech, and used silly tongue twisters to build empathy.
We laughed. We learned. We signed "AAAAHH SHARK!" a lot.
I told them: struggling to speak doesn't mean someone is less smart, less kind, or less worthy.
Einstein didn't speak until he was 5.
Michael Phelps had a lisp and got bullied.
Byron can't say "Mom," but he's extraordinary.
And so are these kids... because they're learning how to be better friends, listeners, and humans.
I gave that little talk 18 times. My voice is shot.
But l'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
Because the future depends on the kindness we teach our depends on the kindness we teach our children today.
