Whether it’s the night before school or the night before church, we all remember sitting between our mother’s, aunties or granny’s legs being told to be still and stop loving while the blue magic sizzles against our forehead from the heat of the hot comb, or the smell of the pink oil they slathered on our hair before placing it in a million ponytails or braids adorned with beads and “bobos”.

What’s your favorite childhood hair memory?

Depression, anxiety, PTSD, personality disorders as well as a list of other disorders are prevalent in the black community and are often misdiagnosed or go untreated either from lack of resources or “doctors” who just want to slap a label on us and throw a pill bottle our way.

For these young women (all under the age of 30) to CHOOSE to put themselves and their mental health first is a big thing. Because as blacks people we don’t really get that option, and as black women we get it even less. They’ve been singled out, made fun of, bullied, called everything adjective but the right ones. We decided we’d personally correct them because all we see is resounding STRENGTH, POWER, BEAUTY, PERSEVERANCE, and enough intelligence to understand the importance of SELF PRESERVATION.
