On June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued—Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved African Americans were free. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not secured by a proclamation alone; it must be protected, expanded, and defended. Today, we honor the resilience, courage, and determination of those who came before us, and we recommit ourselves to building the future they fought to make possible. Happy Juneteenth!
