I’m a recycler, composter, reuser, up-cycler, trash picker, waste diverter. My first business in life (age 10) was collecting my neighbors’ recyclables & turning them in for cash.

The last two years have been a huge crisis of conscience for me - in more ways than one. These photos are the hundreds of masks that I have used as PPE during the pandemic. These represent a small portion of what is/should be my trash. But I just can’t bring myself to toss them. It just feels… wrong. On so many levels.

I envision the turtles with straws stuck in their noses and wonder where do the face mask loops like to entangle wildlife? How many mountains of single use garbage does it take to fill an ocean? Do the white masks harm the earth less than the purple or rainbow masks? What’s the average time it takes a mask to biodegrade? Will the chemicals eventually also be leeching into our water?

To be clear I haven’t purchased a single one of these masks. They have been given to me as part of my jobs. This doesn’t show the quantity of throw away gowns, goggles & gloves that I’ve also used. I’m only a part time nurse. I reused the crap out of many of these masks. My mind really just spins trying to make sense of how making a world more toxic is helping us in the end.

Today I have more questions than answers. I’d love to hear your thoughts-feelings-insights also!! Happy Earth Month 🌎 (I mean every day is Earth Day, but 🥳🌎🌞).
