Set at a 1930s parfumerie in Budapest, the story involves Georg Nowack and Amalia Balash, two feuding coworkers who are secret pen pals. As they fall in love through their letters, and clash in real life, the shop owner Mr. Maraczek falls ill, co-workers Ilona Ritter and Steven Kodaly are sometime lovers, and sales clerk Ladislal Sipos and delivery boy Arpad are kept busy as the Christmas season approaches. Songs include “She Loves Me”, “He Brought Me Ice Cream”, “Good Morning, Good Day”, “Tonight at Eight” and “No More Candy”.

Gian Carlo Menotti’s one-act opera is a delight for young and old. Amahl is a poor disabled shepherd boy, living with his mother near Bethlehem. One night, a bright star appears in the sky over their home; shortly after, three elaborately dressed kings (the Magi) knock at their door. The Magi explain they are bringing gifts to a special child, but need a place to rest for the night. Amahl wants to give a gift as well, and when he offers his crutch his leg is miraculously healed.

Nora Helmer prepares for a lovely Christmas with her husband Torvald and their children. As friends Kristine Lind and Dr. Rank pay calls, a coworker of Torvald’s, Mr. Krogstad, also comes to the house, attempting to save his job at the bank. In desperation, Krogstad plans to blackmail Nora by revealing her secret: she forged her father’s signature to secure a loan, needing the money to nurse an ailing Torvald back to health. Nora and Kristine have both made choices based on society’s expectations for women, leaving them with little recourse. At the end, Nora knows she must leave her husband to better herself.
