Raw Honey Made by Happy Bees in Beautiful Bucks County, PA

Today’s pollinator update: the honeybees (Apis mellifera) are busy with the giant hyssop leaving the coneflowers to the small sweat bees (Ceratina bifida) & the Eastern tiger swallowtail butterflies (Papilio glaucus). Missy Muffet the garden gremlin (Gremlinus hortensus) observes from the safety of her carriage and at a respectful distance.
I have several patches of bergamot mint that all the bees love!
One of the girls foraging on my bergamot mint. These flowers attract so many different types of 🐝 💕. I stood among them for a long time just watching and taking a few pics. I can’t wait to taste the honey they make from this! 🍯

It is extremely dry outdoors - do not forget to establish a hydration station for all small living things within our ecosystem!
We have honey! I’ll be posting some tasting notes and a comparison to last year’s early summer honey next week!
Wonder what we do with the wax cappings after we extract the honey from the comb?
Honey whiskey!
After the worker bees dehydrate the nectar to 16 - 18% hydration, they cap the honeycomb. We have to cut that capping off to extract the honey. That leaves us with several pounds of wax that still has honey! 🍯. We get as much as we can from the wax, then we rinse the capping in whiskey. I’m using Evan Williams 100 proof Bottled in Bond bourbon. 🥃
Add some mint, ice and club soda & you have a Mint Julep. A squeeze of lemon and tonic on ice is also very nice 😊 .
Feeling under the weather? Add hot water and lemon & you’ve got yourself a Hot Toddy - the best remedy for most of what ails you.
I can’t sell this, but I’m happy to offer a cocktail if you stop over for a visit!

What are the bees foraging on today? Catmint!
This early girl is going in to load up her honey stomach with nectar. She will fly back to the colony and offload her haul to one of her sisters who will store it in the honeycomb so that another worker can dehydrate it to make honey. She will also do a little waggle dance to tell the other foragers where she found a good source of nectar and pollen and soon this catmint will be jam packed with others from the colony!

Morning inspection! The girls (& a few of the boys) are busy! I usually play some music when I’m inspecting- today was Bela Fleck playing his arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue(grass). I think they like banjo! The music matched the activity level today 🌞!
Keep doing your rain dances, we need some extended moisture to get all the plants blooming and feeding the pollinators!
