Est. 1984 - Maine Island Soap is made the old fashioned way on the coast on Maine with minimal all natural ingredients. We make our soaps entirely by hand in our little garage that we’ve converted into our soap making room. Several of our fundamental values include being good stewards of the land and living a natural lifestyle with as little impact to the environment as possible. Each bar is hand cut and carefully packaged in our recyclable boxes. If you love the natural purity of the coast of Maine, you'll also love the purity of Maine Island Soap!

🏡 A little fall update from Maine Island Soap!
It's been a busy few weeks here in Ellsworth! Between making soap, pouring candles, packing orders, and welcoming visitors, there's always something happening.
We're especially excited to see our handmade soaps finding their way into more shops across the country.

🫧 FROM POUR TO CURE 🫧
This is what handmade soap looks like around here.
Yesterday, we poured our Blueberry Swirl and Lavender Seaweed into our custom molds, covered them up, tucked them beneath warm blankets and let them do their thing overnight.
Today, the blankets come off. The covers come off. The freezer paper gets carefully cut away so we can flip the loaf, remove the paper, place it back into the mold and get ready for the part we love so much… cutting. 🧼🔪
Because our molds are custom-made with little cutting slits along the sides, we use our special soap-cutting knife to carefully slice each loaf into individual bars.
Then each bar gets placed into its own little cardboard space and onto the curing rack, where it will sit for about 30 days while it continues to harden and become the beautiful bar of soap it was meant to be.
And here’s the thing about handmade soap…
Our hands are in it from beginning to end.
We measure the oils by hand.
We pour the oils by hand.
We pour each batch into its mold by hand.
We line our molds by hand.
We uncover, unmold and cut every loaf by hand.
We carefully place every bar onto the curing racks.
And when they’re ready, we box them by hand too.
There isn’t a giant machine doing the work behind the scenes. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that ☺️🧼🫧)
There’s just us, our little soap shop, our custom molds, a whole lot of soap, and two hands that have been doing this one batch at a time for years. 🤍

400 bars of soap made yesterday… and today they’re getting cut!
Maple & Oats, Citrus Clove & Corn, Orono Black Bear, and Katahdin Pine are all on the cutting table this morning, and the whole shop smells absolutely heavenly. 🍁🌲
We thought it would be fun to bring you along for a little behind-the-scenes look at what actually happens after the soap is poured. From lining the molds and carefully removing the paper, to putting everything back together and cutting each loaf into individual bars… there are a lot of little steps before a bar of soap ever makes it onto our shelves.
