Menopause care is about more than symptom relief. The transition is also a good time to take another look at the health markers that matter for the years ahead.
A May 2026 analysis of national U.S. health data found that perimenopausal women had about twice the odds of a low cardiovascular health score compared with women who still had regular cycles, even after accounting for age. Cholesterol and blood sugar were a big part of that gap.
Bone changes start early, too. In a long-running study of women through the menopause transition, bone loss sped up about a year before the final period and continued for about two years after. It isn't something you can feel, which makes it easy to miss.
Four areas worth revisiting with your provider:
1. Cholesterol and cardiovascular risk
2. Bone density
3. Blood sugar and metabolic health
4. Sleep and symptoms
What was normal for you five years ago may not tell the whole story today.

Before fall gets busy, Kaitlyn Hall, DNP, FNP-BC, shares the three things she encourages all of her patients to focus on for immune health.
1. Sleep. It’s usually the first thing to get sacrificed, but consistent, quality sleep is the foundation for healthy immune function.
2. Nutrition. Plenty of whole foods, protein, fruits and vegetables, and attention to nutrients that support immune health like vitamin D and vitamin C.
3. Stress and movement. Regular exercise and getting outside when you can help regulate stress.
Fall can also be a good time to ask your provider whether vitamin D testing makes sense for you, especially if it’s been a while.
Small daily habits make a big difference. Save this one for when the schedule gets full.

One of the weirdest parts of menopause is how many things can start changing at once, and how easy it is to chalk all of it up to hormones.
Your sleep is off. Your periods are different. Your weight or body composition changes. Maybe your energy does too.
Some of that may absolutely be part of the menopause transition. But this is also a good time to re-check things like blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and bone health instead of assuming every change belongs in the same bucket.
A 2026 U.S. analysis found that perimenopausal women had about twice the odds of having a poor overall cardiovascular health score compared with premenopausal women. The biggest differences were seen in cholesterol and blood sugar.
So if you’re asking, “Is this just menopause?” don’t stop there.
Ask what changed. Ask what should be re-checked. Ask what’s worth treating now instead of waiting.

Headaches, gut issues, fatigue, when symptoms start overlapping, it’s worth asking whether they’re being looked at together.
That overlap is real. In people with disorders of gut-brain interaction, symptoms like headaches, fatigue, sleep disruption, and other non-GI conditions commonly occur alongside digestive symptoms. Researchers also note that these patterns can affect how patients are evaluated and treated.
Sometimes the next step isn’t treating another symptom in isolation. It’s figuring out what deserves a closer look.

For the first time, menopause had its own congressional hearing.
On September 16, the Senate Special Committee on Aging brought clinicians and experts together to talk about some of the biggest gaps in menopause care: research, provider training, and access.
Two numbers help explain why that matters: less than 1% of federal women’s health research funding goes toward menopause, and 80% of OB-GYN residents report feeling ill-prepared to discuss menopause care.
A hearing doesn’t change care overnight. But it does put menopause research, education, and access on the federal agenda in a way they haven’t been before.

Not sure what to ask about your heart health beyond “Is my cholesterol normal?”
Start here.
These five questions can help you have a more useful conversation about blood pressure, family history, blood sugar, cholesterol, and whether markers like ApoB or Lp(a) are worth discussing.

A standard cholesterol panel can tell you a lot about your heart health, but for some people, it may not tell you enough.
If you have a strong family history of heart disease, elevated triglycerides, changes in blood pressure or blood sugar, or other risk factors, your clinician may also consider markers like ApoB or Lp(a) to get a more complete picture of your cardiovascular risk.
Here are some of the things worth looking at beyond LDL alone.
For World Heart Day, consider this your reminder to ask what your numbers mean together, not just whether each one falls inside the reference range.
