Adjusting to Aging and Retirement. Helping older adults prepare for the future! Retirement and Life Coach

06/15/2026

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day reminds us that safety is more than physical protection.

It is being spoken to with respect.
Being included in decisions.
Feeling emotionally safe.
Having financial security.
Knowing your voice still matters.

Many older adults quietly experience manipulation, intimidation, isolation, or exploitation without knowing how to talk about it—or fearing they won’t be believed.

Today is a reminder that dignity does not diminish with age.

Every older adult deserves:
✔ respect
✔ autonomy
✔ emotional safety
✔ support
✔ protection
✔ the freedom to speak up without shame

If something feels “off,” trust yourself enough to pay attention.

And if someone you love seems withdrawn, fearful, isolated, or financially pressured, gentle conversations can make a meaningful difference.

Awareness matters.
Connection matters.
Compassion matters.

Protecting our elders begins with listening to them.

For years, I’ve heard the same thing from the people I work with:

“I don’t feel old.”

And honestly, I understand exactly what they mean.

After 45 years as a psychologist and 14 years working exclusively with older adults and their families, I’ve learned something important:

The number attached to your age and the way you experience yourself internally are often completely different things.

But even when we don’t identify with the word “aging,” life still changes around us:
relationships shift,
purpose evolves,
our bodies ask new questions,
and identity quietly reshapes itself.

I wrote my first Substack article about this very thing — and about why naming these changes isn’t surrender. It’s wisdom.

I also share a bit of my own story:
burnout, reinvention, standing up for what I believed was ethically right in long-term care, and why I believe the third act of life can still be one of growth, purpose, humor, connection, and becoming more fully yourself.

At 73, I’m still learning, still growing, and apparently… still starting new things. 😊

I’d love for you to read it here:

You don’t need to do everything to support your brain.

You just need to do something consistently.

A short walk.
A meaningful conversation.
Learning one small new thing.
Getting a little more rest.

These don’t look dramatic.

But the brain doesn’t respond to dramatic.
It responds to repetition and consistency.

Over time, small habits become strong signals:
Stay active. Stay engaged. Stay responsive.

That’s how cognitive strength is built—not in bursts, but in rhythm.

Forgetfulness isn’t always a memory problem.

Sometimes, it’s an attention problem.

When life gets noisy—too many distractions, too many tabs open (in your browser and your mind)—your brain never fully stores what matters.

And later, it feels like something is “missing.”

But often, nothing is missing.
It was just never fully held.

One simple shift:
Do one thing at a time—fully.

Read without multitasking.
Listen without interrupting yourself.
Finish a thought before starting another.

Focus isn’t something you’ve lost.
It’s something you can gently rebuild.

There’s a moment most people don’t talk about.

You walk into a room and forget why you’re there… and for a second, it makes you wonder.

But here’s something worth remembering:
Your brain is not quietly fading.

It is responding—to how you live each day.

We just released a new post on brain health after 60—not filled with hype or fear, but grounded, practical habits that actually support clarity, memory, and focus.
If you’ve ever wondered what truly makes a difference, this is for you.

Random Acts of Kindness Week is ending — but kindness doesn’t have to be random.
What’s one small habit you can keep to stay connected with older adults in your community?

Aging with dignity is a shared responsibility. Let’s carry it forward. 🤍

02/19/2026

Strong communities don’t separate generations — they connect them.
Older adults have wisdom. Younger folks bring energy and fresh perspective. We’re better when we learn from each other.
Today, create space for generations to connect.

Love isn’t just romantic.

It also looks like inclusion, consistency, and remembering people who might otherwise be overlooked.

Today, invite an older adult into community — a meal, a conversation, or a shared moment. Belonging matters.

02/17/2026

Kindness isn’t about taking over — it’s about showing up in ways that respect independence.

Offer help with groceries, technology, or errands.

Ask first. Listen to the answer. Support without assuming.

That’s dignity-centered care.

02/16/2026

Every older adult has a lifetime of experiences, lessons, and resilience behind them.

Today’s kindness: ask a question and really listen.
“What’s something you’ve learned the hard way?”
“What’s a memory that still makes you smile?”

Being heard is a powerful form of care.
