Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that joy comes after everything else.

After the work is finished.
After the house is clean.
After the kids are grown.
After life finally settles down.

But what if we’ve been looking at it backwards?

Joy isn’t something we earn once we’ve carried enough responsibility. It’s one of the ways we care for ourselves while we’re carrying it.

Take the walk.
Call the friend.
Dance in the kitchen.
Read the book.
Laugh a little longer.

You do not have to earn joy.

One of the biggest fears parents have when reaching out for therapy is:

“What if my child is too angry?”
“What if they have scary thoughts?”
“What if they won’t open up?”

Christina wants parents to know something important:

Your child does not need to have it all together before coming to therapy.

As an art therapist, Christina creates a space where children and teens can safely express big emotions without fear of judgment.

Anger.
Anxiety.
Frustration.
Confusion.
Fear.

These feelings aren’t bad. They’re signals.

Through art therapy, creative expression, and conversation, children can learn healthier ways to understand and express what they’re feeling instead of bottling it up until it explodes.

Healing starts when a child realizes they don’t have to carry those feelings alone. 🤍

How Travel Can Heal the Soul: Reflections on Italy | Armonía — Armonía Life Design | Counseling, Wellness Space & Retreats 07/20/2026

Some experiences stay with us long after we return home.

Not only because of where we went, but because of what the experience helped us remember.

In this reflection, Emily Sutherland shares what unfolded during Donna Marie Marino, LMFT ’s recent retreat in Italy: beauty, adventure, shared meals, laughter, presence, and the unexpected healing that can happen when we step outside our usual routines.

One line captures the heart of it:

“Life’s pain, questions, and shared struggles are more bearable when we face them shoulder-to-shoulder with those who are willing to help us hold them.”

Travel did not erase what Emily was carrying. It gave her a new vantage point—and reminded her that there is always more to life, and more to us, than our sadness, uncertainty, or failures.

Have you ever been in the middle of a conversation and suddenly felt like you couldn’t think clearly?

Your heart starts racing.

Your body tenses.

You become reactive, shut down, or feel an overwhelming urge to escape.

You tell yourself to “calm down,” but nothing seems to work.

There’s actually a clinical term for this:

Emotional flooding.

When we’re emotionally flooded, our body reacts before our thinking brain has a chance to catch up.

That’s why trying to “think harder” rarely brings us back to peace.

Swipe through to learn more about emotional flooding, why it happens, and one simple question Donna often asks clients to help them find their way back.

“I’m not artistic enough for art therapy.”

Christina OrtizKing Art Therapist hears this all the time.

And her answer is simple:

You do not have to be “good at art” to benefit from art therapy.

As an art therapist, Christina meets clients where they are by finding creative materials that feel approachable instead of intimidating.

That might look like:

Knitting.
Felting.
Friendship bracelets.
Play-Doh.
Air-dry clay.
Diamond painting.
Or making something with full permission to destroy it afterward.

Because art therapy is not about creating something beautiful.

It’s about expression.
Safety.
Exploration.
And learning that it’s okay to try without needing to perform.

Sometimes the first step is just finding a creative process that doesn’t scare you.

And from there, confidence can grow. 🎨🤍

Peace is often misunderstood.

We tend to think peace means nothing difficult is happening.

That life is calm.
That everyone is behaving themselves.
That our plans are working out exactly as we hoped.

But real life doesn’t work that way.

There will be uncertainty.
There will be setbacks.
There will be moments that knock us off center.

As Pope Francis reminds us:

“We need to be artisans of peace, for building peace is a craft that demands serenity, creativity, sensitivity, and skill.”

Peace is not something we stumble upon once everything is perfect.

It is something we practice.

A choice to return to ourselves.
A willingness to respond rather than react.
A commitment to creating more calm, compassion, and understanding in our own lives and relationships.

What helps you return to peace when life feels overwhelming?

Have you ever felt like you’ve talked about something a hundred times… and it still hurts just as much?

For some people, insight isn’t the problem.

They understand what happened.
They know why it affected them.
They’ve talked through it extensively.

But their body is still carrying the trauma.

That’s one reason Colleen incorporates Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) into her work.

ART uses eye movements to help the brain and body process traumatic experiences in a different way. Instead of staying stuck in analysis, clients can begin moving through the emotional and physical charge that trauma often leaves behind.

Many clients are surprised to discover how much their body has been holding.

Tight shoulders.
A knot in the stomach.
A racing heart.
A feeling they can’t quite explain.

Healing isn’t just about understanding what happened.

Sometimes it’s about helping the body realize it’s safe now. 🤍

One of the most beautiful things about Donna Marie Marino, LMFT’s retreats isn’t just where you go.

It’s who you become connected to along the way.

After returning home from Italy, one participant shared:

“I told my husband I would love everyone and I feel like I have 5 new friends!”

There is something powerful about stepping away from your everyday routine and sharing meaningful experiences with people who quickly begin to feel like family.

The meals.
The conversations.
The laughter.
The adventures.
The moments you’ll find yourself talking about years later.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Italy and helped create memories that will be cherished forever.

And yes… we love the new tattoo, too. 😉❤️
