If I have a competitive advantage?
It’s that I am genuinely having so much fun.
Not because I’ve figured out how to perfectly balance business and life.
But because I stopped believing they had to be separate.
My kids are spontaneously hanging out of our RV in the Badlands. I’m laughing at our family scramble through a rainstorm at one of my favorite TN waterfalls. We get to go down triple slides together, have circus days, be exhilarated by a city helicopter tour out of John C. Tune, go on road trips and ridiculous adventures and experience moments that probably don’t belong in a polished business feed.
Honestly? I love it ALL.
It’s too hard and unnatural for me to be perfectly polished and compartmentalized all the time, but this is the part people don’t always see:
My life feeds my business.
My business feeds my life.
The whole machine has become this beautiful feedback loop.
I suppose that could be a reason why I love tattoos and permanent makeup so much.
They’re a way to let life both literally and metaphorically leave a mark on you.
Get your brows done so you can swim in the waterfall without being self conscious about them.
Get your lips done so you can wake up, throw on sunscreen and go straight to work or play without thinking about feeling washed out.
Get the tattoo because you experienced something, survived something, loved someone, became someone…
or simply because you thought, “That would look fu***ng cool.”
Life is going to leave a mark on you anyway, I promise.

The Bet on Myself
This photo was taken in the summer of 2021.
It was the culminating moment of my lip blushing training and certification, working on my very first lip-blushing client.
I remember exactly how that moment felt.
There was this strange push and pull between I know I can do this and I really, really hope I don’t mess this up.
Because there is something humbling about putting a needle on someone’s face for the first time.
It’s a real come-to-Jesus moment.
You wonder if you’re actually as good as you think you are. You wonder if you can do the thing you came here to learn. You wonder if you’ve chosen the right path.
And I had a lot riding on that decision.
In the year leading up to the day this photo was taken, I had lost my job as a Creative Director during COVID. I couldn’t find another job. Nobody was hiring. Domestic help and childcare were still scarce if they were available at all. I had four kids at home doing remote school, unemployment had run out, and I was living on savings and the severance package my former employer had given me.
I had never had a trouble gaining employment before, but the usual options weren’t really options anymore.

The swallow is hope in lyrical earthly form. A reminder that even when life changes in ways we never expected, there is still beauty in moving forward. In letting go. In seeking a way through one season and into the next.
She has loved deeply, lost deeply, and has continued to move through it all with so much grace.
Something about the swallow feels so perfectly lyrical for her. Light, graceful, resilient, always moving forward.
The only constant in life is change.
So this one is for hope. For new seasons. For everything that has been, everything that is, and everything still to come.
Twenty years of thinking about it. Finally, now and forever, she has her beautiful bird in flight. A symbol to lift her spirit for all time. 🪽

Effortlessly Polished, With a Little Drama 🖤
Some clients come back to me because they’re ready to simplify, and this repeat client knew exactly what she wanted.
We went deep, dark, rich black with her permanent eyeliner because she can absolutely handle the drama. She doesn’t typically wear much makeup, but she’s always wanted that smoky, defined eye, and she was ready to stop spending so much time and money on eyelash extensions.
Permanent eyeliner gives her that “eyes already done” look without the daily maintenance. Perfect for a lifestyle that involves traveling, building a business, and teaching MahJong, when getting ready needs to be ultra simplified.
And here’s where the artistry really matters:
Did you know? Black is not just black. 🖤
There’s a basic black, and then there’s a rich black, a carefully balanced pigment with underlying notes of red, blue, and brown that create dimension, depth, and that beautiful, saturated finish.
Understanding how those colors interact, and more importantly, how pigment behaves once it’s implanted into living skin, is critical. Skin is not a blank canvas. Undertone, saturation, pigment selection, depth of implantation, and healing all affect the final result.
This is where my design background comes in handy. Color theory isn’t just for the canvas. It’s fundamental to permanent makeup. Knowing how to build a color, anticipate how it will heal, and choose the right saturation for her skin is what turns “black eyeliner” into beautifully intentional eyeliner.
Her skin took the pigment beautifully, and that rich black was exactly the right choice for the bold, smoky definition she wanted.
Less makeup. Less maintenance. More impact.
That’s the beauty of permanent makeup when artistry and technical skill come together. ✨

Apparently, I have a little bit of a problem…
I’m a perfectionist. (Shhh, my current people. I know you know!)
And apparently, the Williamson County Health Department has been enabling me.
I’ve never received less than a 100 on my health inspections. Not once. 🥇
And now Williamson Source has gone and published an entire article recognizing the businesses in Williamson County that earned a PERFECT 100 on their health inspections… which includes tattoo studios.
So yes, I’m going to brag about this one!
But here’s the part where I make fun of myself…
I literally JUST discovered that Williamson Source publishes these perfect inspection-score articles every quarter.
EVERY. QUARTER.
And we’ve been at our current location for YEARS. 😂
So apparently, I’ve been out here secretly collecting perfect 100’s like participation trophies while completely unaware that there was an actual newspaper article documenting it.
I’m clearly very good at sanitation.
Less good at keeping up with the news. 🤦♀️😂
But honestly, this one matters.
Because when you’re choosing someone to put permanent artwork on your body, sanitation shouldn’t be an afterthought. It should be non-negotiable.
That 100 means more than “Christine likes things clean.” It means the Health Department has inspected my studio and found it meeting or exceeding the required standards for sanitation, safety, and infection-control practices.
And for my clients and future clients, that means you can walk into Van Cleave Aesthetics knowing that I take the part you can’t see just as seriously as the beautiful work you came for.
Clean surfaces. Proper disinfection. Sterile supplies. Safe procedures. Meticulous protocols.
Basically… I’m not playing around when it comes to your skin. 😇
