A question we hear almost every week at the studio: does semi-permanent hair dye actually damage your hair?

Short answer: not the way permanent color can, but it is not nothing either. Semi-permanent color sits on the hair shaft instead of opening it up with ammonia, which is why it fades instead of growing out with a hard line. That gentler process is also why people reach for it between salon visits or to test a tone before committing.

Where it goes wrong is repetition without a plan. Applying it over already-processed hair, skipping bond treatments, or layering color on color without a stylist checking porosity first, that is where the damage conversation starts. Box dye marketed as semi-permanent is also not always what it claims to be once you read the ingredient list.

A client came in this week trying to fix a box dye. She wanted a nice, soft tone. That is not what a box does. Box color is built to deposit as dark and as much as possible so it works on the widest number of heads, which is the opposite of the controlled, custom tone you were actually after.

Here is the honest part. Cheap and quality do not live in the same box when it comes to your hair. What looks like a $12 shortcut usually becomes a correction that costs real money and real time, because we are undoing buildup and uneven deposit before we can even start on the color you wanted.

Nearly three decades behind the chair, three kids, one salon. I know the version of you that puts herself last, because I have been her.
