I say this, because I desperately want what’s best for every artist out there. I want you to be the most confident, successful, incredible version of yourself in your career.

I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but we need to talk about a minimum standard if you’re calling yourself a permanent makeup artist.

This industry is largely self motivated. No one is making sure you keep your skills sharp, study your long term results, understand your materials, or continue getting better. We have to hold that line ourselves.

I 100% believe the concepts I’m listing here are the absolute bare minimum to truly call yourself a professional.

Can you tattoo? Can you execute the fundamentals when nobody’s watching?

Do you actually understand your pigments beyond the color in the bottle?

Are you collecting and studying your own data so you can stop guessing, recognize patterns, and actually contribute to the knowledge and innovation this industry desperately needs?

Do you understand the limitations of the craft well enough to recognize when something isn’t possible, isn’t sustainable, or simply shouldn’t be done?

I believe every artist should hold themselves to a basic minimum standard. One that protects you, protects your clients, pushes you to become a better artist, and helps move our industry forward.

Because if we don’t hold ourselves to that standard, literally no one will.

1. PRACTICE

If you can’t line and shade on latex with a halfway decent amount of skill, you don’t deserve your client’s trust.

You have a responsibility to maintain the fundamental skills people are trusting you to use on their faces. Your clients shouldn’t be the only time you pick up your machine. Keep those skills sharp, and better yet, keep improving them.

2. PIGMENTS

Knowing the color in the bottle isn’t enough. You need to understand what’s actually in your pigments, how those ingredients behave in the skin, how they behave in combination with one another, and what happens to them over time. Your choices today can create problems years from now. Especially when it’s time for laser.
