Slopes taught me pretty quickly that bare soil and heavy rain are not a great combination. 🌧️🌿 I’d much rather have living roots helping hold the surface together.
🌸 Moss phlox spreads into a low mat, so it’s useful for sunny, well-drained areas where I want coverage close to the soil.
🍓 Wild strawberry spreads by runners and can gradually knit open patches together while still looking natural.
🌾 Little bluestem brings something different — its fibrous root system reaches much deeper than a typical groundcover and adds great fall texture above ground too.
🌱 I usually combine plants with different root depths instead of depending on a single species. That gives the slope much better coverage from top to bottom.
One important lesson: plants take time to establish. On a freshly planted or steep slope, I still protect exposed soil from runoff while those roots are getting settled.
