Haven’t eaten carbs in a while? Don’t be afraid to bring them back. 🍓🍯
If you’ve spent months or even years restricting carbs, when you reintroduce them can be a helpful place to start.
One strategy? Include carbohydrates with a balanced breakfast.
Insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance can vary throughout the day, and for many people, earlier meals can be a useful opportunity to fuel the body rather than extending an overnight fast even longer.
The goal isn’t to fear carbs, glucose, or insulin.
It’s to help your body become metabolically flexible enough to use the food you eat for energy.
Carbs aren’t something you have to “earn.” 👏
Save this if you’re working on making peace with carbs again.
“I guess I’m just getting older…” But is age really the whole story? 👀
Years of chronic dieting, aggressive fasting, skipping meals and constantly restricting carbs can change how your body adapts to energy intake.
And eventually, you may start noticing it:
Less energy. Poor sleep. More cravings. Difficulty managing your weight. Feeling like the things that “worked” in your 20s suddenly don’t anymore.
That doesn’t mean your metabolism is permanently “destroyed.” But it may be time to stop pushing harder and start looking at the bigger metabolic picture.
Your answer shouldn’t always be eat less, fast longer, cut more.
Sometimes the better question is: What does my body actually need to function well again?
Your blood sugar going up after you eat isn’t automatically a problem. 👀
Eat an apple, have some honey, drink orange juice. glucose is expected to rise after carbohydrates. What matters is what happens next.
Does it rise and then return toward baseline? Or does glucose stay elevated for hours?
There’s a big difference between a normal post-meal rise and chronically elevated blood sugar and constantly fearing every increase on your glucose monitor can distract from the bigger metabolic picture.
Stop obsessing over a single spike. Start asking why your body is struggling to regulate glucose in the first place.
“I can’t eat carbs. Once I start, I can’t stop.”
But are carbohydrates actually what you’re craving?
Think about it: when was the last time you heard someone say, “I ate one plain baked potato… and then I couldn’t stop until I ate seven.” 🥔
When people say they’re “addicted to carbs,” they’re often talking about highly palatable foods that contain carbs + fats + salt + added ingredients not whole-food carbohydrate sources themselves.
That distinction matters.
Instead of blaming an entire macronutrient, start looking at the whole food, the overall diet, and the context.
And when you see a scary nutrition headline? Don’t stop at the headline. Look at what was actually studied and how the study was designed.
Your body has an entire system designed to turn glucose into energy. ⚡️
It’s called glycolysis and it’s one of the fundamental ways your cells produce usable energy from glucose.
So why has the conversation around metabolic health become so focused on avoiding it?
The bigger picture isn’t about labeling one fuel source as “good” or “bad.” It’s about building a metabolism that can efficiently use the fuel available to it.
That’s where metabolic flexibility comes in.
Instead of spending your life fearing certain foods or trying to force your body into one way of producing energy, start understanding how your metabolism is actually designed to work.
Your body needs fuel. The goal is being able to use it well.
