Smoke & Mirrors is an inclusive, gender-neutral salon focused on skill, creativity & genuine stylist/guest connection. Appointment only. No walk-ins.

Located inside Karma Beauty Room, a private home studio in Grayling. Smoke & Mirrors Hair Studio is located downtown Grayling, MI. We pride ourselves on offering a relaxing experience with a warm, down to earth, intimate setting. While many people in today’s society believe that bigger is better, we feel that you lose that connection with the guests in big, busy salons. We wanted to bring that stylist/guest relationship to the forefront and provide a calm, nonjudgmental, come as you are, good vibes only kind of atmosphere. After the hustle and bustle of a busy day, guests can come in and be greeted by a smile. They can grab a cup of coffee or an adult beverage and relax. Huge advocates for being yourself and mental health awareness. . The owner/stylist is Certified Pravana Master Colorist, Certified Paul Mitchell Color Expert, and Certified in DreamCatchers Hair Extensions as well as Aqua Hair Extensions. She specializes in fashion color, color correction, balayage, and natural, lived in, low maintenance color. Men's hair crafting is my second art. Highly experienced in bald fades, military cuts, and beard work. She places high value on listening to her guests, understanding their needs, and respecting the integrity of their hair while she strives for unlimited creativity. We believe hair has no gender. We are a non binary, gender neutral salon. Everyone is welcome here.

Hi! Just a quick heads-up before your upcoming appointment. Until my internet service is updated, my cell service at the salon is very limited, which can make processing card payments difficult.
For the time being, please plan to bring cash to your appointment. I’ll send you an estimate for your scheduled service before your appointment so you know approximately how much to bring.
Thank you so much for your patience and understanding while I get everything up and running! 🖤

When that purples hair is doing the most...

Photos from Smoke & Mirrors Hair Studio's post 08/28/2026

Hey... remember me. 🤣

First day at the new shop officially in the books. 🖤✂️

Am I completely caught up and organized yet? Absolutely fu***ng not. 😂 If you’re waiting on me for scheduling, I promise I haven’t forgotten about you. I’ll be getting with everyone over the weekend and into early next week. Thank you for being patient while I get my s**t together and settled into the new space.

Butttttt… HOW ABOUT THIS COLOR for my first one back behind the chair?! 😍 That deep, smoky violet in different lighting is everything.

And peep those flowers in the background. 🥹 She brought me flowers for my first day at the new shop and pretty much made my whole damn day.

Feels really fu***ng good to be doing hair again. 🖤

CONGRATULATIONS, Christine Nothstine 🎉❤️

I am so incredibly proud of you. You are so deserving of this recognition. Everyone please take a second to congratulate one of the best teachers and robotics coaches out there! This woman genuinely cares about her students and is so passionate about helping kids learn, grow, and believe in themselves.

It’s kind of crazy how life brings people back around.

When we moved to Boyne, Sarah was in robotics and Christine was her teacher. Sarah was so excited about that class and absolutely loved it. Years later, after I moved to Grayling, Christine ended up sitting in my chair. Somewhere along the way we put two and two together and realized she had been Sarah’s teacher—and it’s pretty much been history ever since. 😂❤️

The last couple of years, we’ve gone through a whole lot of life together, which makes seeing you receive this recognition even more special.

Christine, you are one of the strongest, most resilient, passionate, amazing women I know. You pour so much of yourself into the kids you teach and coach, and I am SO damn happy to see you recognized for the impact you make.

Seriously, I’m over here SCREAMING CONGRATULATIONS!!! 🥹👏🎉

You earned this. You deserve this. And I am so fu***ng proud of you. ❤️

The salon is officially closed. 🖤

And I don't even really know how to put into words what it feels like to say that.

Thank you to every single person who shared this space with me over the last five years. We made a LOT of memories in those walls. We laughed until we cried. We actually cried. We celebrated. We struggled. We healed. We talked about life, relationships, kids, careers, heartbreak, wins, losses and everything in between.

Somewhere along the way, we built a family.

And holy s**t, did we survive some things together.

I graduated my children. I went through two huge breakups. I moved into my own place. I grinded it out as a single mother. I survived domestic violence. I lost my father and dealt with the absolute nightmare that came with that. I GOT HIT BY A FU***NG CAR. I lost my poor dog. There was health s**t, family s**t, business s**t and plenty of moments where I genuinely didn't know how I was going to keep everything moving.

But I did.

And I also know that I built this by myself.

I'm really fu***ng proud of that.

I'm proud of the space I created. I'm proud of the business I built. I'm proud that people walked through those doors and felt comfortable enough to be completely themselves. Thank you for trusting me with your hair, but even more than that, thank you for trusting me with your lives. Thank you for feeling safe enough to be vulnerable in my chair.

The feeling we created in that little salon is something I don't think I'll ever be able to replace. I've never loved something that much besides my children.

During my time there, that building went through four different owners and I watched five other businesses open and close.

I stayed.

And Smoke & Mirrors didn't just survive — it thrived.

I want to make something really clear as I close this chapter: I didn't make this decision because my business was failing. I didn't leave because I wasn't busy. I could have found another location. I had several other options.

I chose not to.

Running a business of that scale completely alone is fu***ng hard. And I think I managed it pretty damn well.

I may be an unconventional cosmetologist. 😂 I'm not going to say unprofessional because, let's be fair, maybe to an extent. But apparently Northern Michigan needed a hairstylist who swears too much, tells you the truth about your hair and somehow turns a hair appointment into a therapy session, comedy show and occasional complete s**tshow.

And now, for probably the first time in my life, I'm making a decision based entirely on what is good for me.

Not because I have to.

Not because my kids need me to.

Not because it's what someone else expects from me.

Because I want to.

I'm ready to chase some of my other dreams. I'm ready to really love doing hair again without carrying an entire building and business on my shoulders. I'm ready to spend more time actually enjoying my life instead of constantly surviving it.

And I'm really fu***ng excited to work alongside another badass human at Karma Beauty Room, LLC. Danielle Dwyer and I have very similar styles, the same kind of energy, and I have a feeling we're going to be one hell of a fu***ng team under the same roof.

No competition. No weird salon bulls**t. Just two strong-ass women who are damn good at what they do, supporting each other, doing cool s**t and running our businesses our way.

Honestly, putting the two of us in the same building might be a little dangerous. 😂🖤

Before I close this out, I need to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who showed up and helped me pack this place up. And thank you to everyone who came and picked up art, furniture and all the random pieces of Smoke & Mirrors that needed a new home. It makes my heart happy seeing things that were part of this space go on to bring someone else joy.

And a HUGE fu***ng thank you to Stacie Mead Thayer , Andy Czuba, and Shelby Leigh Boissevain for helping me actually move all this s**t. 😂 I genuinely do not know how I would've done it without you guys.

And shoutout to Jack VanPutten for letting us steal your truck for a few. 😂

You guys are the real MVPs. Seriously. Thank you. 🖤

Smoke & Mirrors isn't gone.

Smoke & Mirrors was never just four walls and a sign on a building.

It's a brand.

It's me.

It's all of you.

WE are Smoke & Mirrors.

And that's not changing.

I know changing locations is scary for some of you — and y'all know I'm anxious as f**k, so believe me, I GET IT. 😂 Before your appointments, I'll make sure everyone gets guidance on where you're going, where to park and all the general housekeeping stuff so you know exactly what to expect before you ever walk through the door.

Your booking system stays the same. Appointments available online at https://smoke-mirrors-hair-studio.square.site/
The shop number stays the same. Text 989-290-5128.
Your appointments stay the same.

The address is simply changing.

Thank you for five incredible years in that space.

Thank you for every laugh. Every tear. Every story. Every hug. Every ridiculous conversation. Every "do whatever you want with my hair." Every referral. Every share. Every appointment. Every single time you chose my chair.

I've loved serving this community from that little salon more than I can explain. I even had a nice chat and bittersweet goodbye with Mr. GoodalesBakery. That guy's memory is sharp as a tac.

I'm sad as hell to leave it.

But I'm so fu***ng excited to see what happens when I finally choose a life that leaves some room for me, too.

On to the next chapter. 🖤

Smoke & Mirrors isn't going anywhere.

We're just changing the view.

Almost forgot to share this but I voted. I hope u did too cause its immmmmportant! Shout out to The Dive for the most appropriate shirt to wear voting! If you haven't checked out her shop in Ga***rd, I highly suggest it. She has a huge clearance sale this weekend. Not to mention, when Shelby from Down By the River Massage and I were there shopping, there was a pay what you can rack, which I thought was amazing.

Got a message from my lil dude saying he had some regrets about that #2 guard all over last month.

I told him, “That’s what happens when women get bangs, homie.” Maybe he’d feel better about it if we colored it.

Being 14, his options for generating disposable income are pretty limited, so I asked if he wanted to come help me pack up the shop and work for it. He showed up and did the damn thing.

We tossed around some color ideas and landed on platinum. Somewhere in the middle of the process we accidentally landed on 90s Slim Shady, because that pretone was PRETONING.

But after the toner—my lil dude is PLATINUM.
We skipped the smiley faces this time, but they’re absolutely coming in the future.

Kid wanted cool hair. Kid put in the work. I can respect that. 🤘

This is why I LOVE a good before & after. Longtime guest, first time color.

We started with a solid warm copper canvas and completely changed the vibe — lots of movement, texture, dimension and those perfectly imperfect pops of pink, berry and smoky tones woven throughout.

And THAT CUT. ✂️ The shaggy layers, waves and fringe took this from pretty hair to hair with an actual personality.

Not every transformation needs to be blonde, brighter or perfectly blended. Sometimes we want dimension, weird little pops of color and a whole lot of texture.

This one was FUN. Next time, greeeennnnn.
