Does curl type matter when starting locs?

Yes... but not in the way y'all think.
It's not about "can you get locs" — ANY hair can loc.It's about how your loc journey is going to behave.
Looser curl patterns:
take longer to lock unravel easier in the beginning need more patience + a different maintenance approach
Tighter curl patterns:
lock faster hold styles easier⚫ can still struggle if the scalp/habits aren't right
So no... your curl type doesn't disqualify you.
But it DOES determine your timeline, your routine, and how you should be caring for your hair. And this is where people mess up...
They follow advice from someone with a completely different hair type, then wonder why their locs aren't doing the same thing
Locs are not one-size-fits-all.

Clients find me when they are ahout to give up on their hair. And i help restore them to their former glory usually quietly and privately without great fanfare, most of my clients come to me by way of referral, a fact that i wear with a badge of honor but i sadly realized that while im working away quietly...saving heads one at a time some stylist are very loud, very visible and because they speak as if they have authority people assume they know what they are doing. Nope - ive repaired the hair of many of their cl8ents too.

Back to the story...This client came to me because her hair was suffering, her external condition was now matching her internal depressive state. She had been to several stylists already who had tried and could not figure out how to un- tangle the mess she had created. It bacame a vicious cycle and even more of a downward spiral. When she came in, her hair told me a story, and i listened with curiousity, and offered her a judgement free, safe space to decompress.

In cases like this i play soft music, and listen with a compassionate ear, i lay out a plan for restoration. Our journey was quite colorful, and with a few bumps along the way...we finally reached our desired goal 10hrs later. This is hands down one of my very favorite services to provide -loc restoration. Most stylist hate doing loc repair but this is where i shine and i feel truly honored when i am chosen for this task. Its not always the stylist with the biggest following, or the one that talks the loudest or who is the most showy. Sometimes its the camera shy stylist, quietly moving mountains and making everyday miracles without much fanfare and who allows the work to speak for itself. Restoring dignity in the process.

For my loc appreciators: What do locs represent to you? I feel like they are the ultimste psycological decolonization hack of course it does not mean automatically everyone with locs operate with a mind that's on an elevated level, we are not a monolith.

What i love to see once my clients begin the loc journey, is the unfolding of the unique version of themselves they will meet along the way. Some of my clients start eating healthier, discovering new sweaty hobbies. , some start cleansing and fasting, some develop deeper intimscy with their partners as they embrace themselces touching their own hair and inviting other to touch it without shame.

Daring to wear your own hair and embracing your unique beauty flies in the face of the way the world wants us to see ourselves and that is something we should be proud of. That phenomenal woman you are blossoming into is you.
