R&B music is soothing to me

In 1996, Keith Sweat dominated the airwaves with 'Twisted', a masterclass in smooth R&B that perfectly captured the sound of mid-90s romance.

By the time the mid-1990s rolled around, Keith Sweat was already a certified legend of the New Jack Swing era, having defined the late 1980s alongside producers like Teddy Riley. However, the musical landscape was shifting towards a slower, more bass-heavy R&B sound. Releasing his self-titled fifth studio album under Elektra Records, Sweat needed to prove he could evolve with the times. He teamed up with the Atlanta-based girl group K*t Klose, whom he had discovered and mentored, to craft a sound that was both nostalgic and undeniably fresh for the modern club scene.

The creation of 'Twisted' was a collaborative triumph that leaned heavily on the vocal chemistry between Sweat and K*t Klose lead singer Athena Cage. The production traded the frenetic drum machines of New Jack Swing for a sultry, creeping bassline and minimalist percussion, allowing the vocal interplay to take center stage. Sweat's signature begging, pleading vocal style was perfectly balanced by the airy harmonies of the female trio. The studio sessions focused on layering these smooth textures, creating a call-and-response dynamic that felt incredibly intimate and instantly catchy.

The strategic pivot paid off massively, as 'Twisted' skyrocketed to number two on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the biggest crossover pop hit of Sweat's extensive career. The track drove the Keith Sweat album to multi-platinum status, selling over four million copies. Today, 'Twisted' remains a definitive staple of 90s R&B playlists, a testament to Sweat's incredible ear for talent and his ability to reinvent himself.
