Pregnancy can literally kill you. When you're pregnant you deserve safety and support — not stress and harm.

And that is not an exaggeration. Women are dying. Women are developing conditions that follow them for the rest of their lives. Women are pushing through the hardest physical and emotional experience of their lives while simultaneously managing stress that nobody should be carrying alone — let alone someone who is growing a human being inside of her body.

This is not the time to be walking on eggshells. It's not the time to be absorbing someone else's anger, insecurity, or carelessness. It's not the time to be fighting for basic decency from the one person who is supposed to have your back no matter what. Stress during pregnancy isn't just uncomfortable — it's dangerous. And the people closest to her need to understand that.

She is not being dramatic. She is not being high maintenance. She is literally keeping another life alive inside of her while her body goes through changes most people will never fully understand. The least — the absolute least — the people around her can do is make that season feel safe.

If you can't show up for her when she is at her most vulnerable, that says everything.

Protect pregnant women. Full stop.

I once shared a post with a quote that struck me: "Childbirth is sabotaged to keep women disempowered. Because if they had their babies in autonomy and sovereignty they'd arrive to motherhood feeling so empowered and strong, they'd overtake every level of government.” This resonates, considering how the medical system often strips autonomy from Black women during birth. The doula movement aims to reclaim this power, ensuring mothers are heard and protected. But is it enough to challenge such a deep-rooted system? These thoughts sit with me as I reflect on childbirth and advocacy.
