🧪 ACIDS: What’s the Difference Between AHA, BHA & the Others?

There are SO many skincare products called “acids,” but they don’t all work the same way. Knowing which family an acid belongs to—and what it actually does—is important when choosing a treatment or home-care protocol.

🔵 BHA — Beta Hydroxy Acids

What they do:
BHA is oil-soluble, which allows it to pe*****te into the pore and work through oil and buildup.

The most common BHA:
• Salicylic Acid – helps dissolve excess oil and dead cells inside the pore. Excellent for blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, acne and oily/congested skin.

Other salicylate ingredients may be found in skincare, such as betaine salicylate and capryloyl salicylic acid (LHA). LHA is often discussed alongside BHA but is technically a related salicylate rather than a classic BHA.

👉 Think BHA = Pores + Oil + Congestion

🟠 AHA — Alpha Hydroxy Acids

What they do:
AHAs are primarily water-soluble and work mainly at the skin’s surface to loosen the bonds between dead skin cells.

Common AHAs:
• Glycolic Acid – powerful surface exfoliation, texture, fine lines and pigmentation
• Lactic Acid – exfoliation + hydration; often better tolerated by drier or more sensitive skin
• Mandelic Acid – larger molecule, slower pe*******on; useful for acne, pigmentation and uneven texture
• Malic Acid – exfoliation and skin-smoothing
• Tartaric Acid – exfoliation and antioxidant support
• Citric Acid – exfoliation and antioxidant properties; also commonly used to adjust pH

👉 Think AHA = Surface + Texture + Pigmentation

🟢 What About Acids That Are NOT AHA or BHA?

This is where it gets interesting!

PHA — Polyhydroxy Acids
• Gluconolactone
• Lactobionic Acid
• Maltobionic Acid

PHAs provide gentle exfoliation and are generally considered more suitable for skin that doesn't tolerate stronger exfoliating acids well.

Azelaic Acid
Not an AHA or BHA. It has anti-inflammatory, keratinization-regulating and pigment-modulating properties and can be helpful for acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and redness-prone skin.

Kojic Acid
Not an AHA or BHA. It is primarily used for pigmentation because it inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production.

Tranexamic Acid
Not an exfoliating acid. It is used primarily as a pigment-modulating ingredient, particularly in protocols addressing stubborn discoloration.

Retinoic Acid / Retinoids
Despite the word “acid” in retinoic acid, retinoids are vitamin A derivatives—not AHAs or BHAs. They influence cellular turnover and normalization rather than functioning as traditional exfoliating acids.

⭐ The takeaway:

AHA → primarily surface exfoliation
BHA → oil-soluble + pore-focused
PHA → gentler exfoliation
Azelaic Acid → acne, inflammation & pigmentation
Kojic Acid → pigmentation
Tranexamic Acid → pigmentation
Retinoids → cellular communication & normalization

And remember: the fact that two products contain an “acid” does NOT mean they should be used interchangeably. Understanding the physiology behind the ingredient is what allows you to choose the right acid for the right skin—and avoid over-exfoliating it. 🧴✨
