☀️ Summer Skin Protection Series ☀️

🧐 Did you know heat alone can make hyperpigmentation worse?

Most people think only the sun causes dark spots—but heat itself can trigger excess melanin production, especially if you’re prone to melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

That means even on cloudy days, or while spending time outdoors in the summer, your skin may still be responding to the heat.

✨ To help protect your skin:
• Wear SPF every day.
• Seek shade when possible.
• Wear a wide-brim hat outdoors.
• Keep your skin cool during prolonged heat exposure.
• Use products that help regulate melanin production, such as tyrosinase inhibitors, if recommended for your skin.

Healthy, even-toned skin isn’t just about protecting yourself from the sun—it’s also about understanding how your skin responds to heat.

Struggling with hyperpigmentation? We’d be happy to help you determine the best plan for your skin. 💜

☀️ Skin Protection Series ☀️

Our last educational post talked about Tyrosinase Inhibitors and what their job was. So now, let’s talk about products we here at Purple Lotus KC recommend.

Not all dark spots are the same which means they shouldn’t all be treated the same.

One of the biggest misconceptions is there’s a one size fits all product that treats every type of hyperpigmentation.

The truth? The cause of your pigment matters.

That’s why we recommend different products depending on what’s happening in your skin.

✨ Lira Clinical PRO Lite
Best for:
• New or mild hyperpigmentation
• Post-inflammatory pigment (after acne or irritation)
• Sun-induced discoloration
• Preventing pigment from becoming more stubborn

Think of this as your early front
line intervention serum. It helps interrupt excess pigment production before it has a chance to become deeply established. It combines multiple brightening ingredients—including arbutin, kojic acid, azelaic acid, hexylresorcinol, and MASQ-tech (exclusive to Lira) to brighten skin while calming inflammation.

✨ Lira Clinical PRO Brite-Plus
Best for:
• Stubborn hyperpigmentation
• Melasma
• Chronic discoloration
• Persistent uneven skin tone

This serum is formulated for pigment that’s more difficult to treat. Its key ingredient, tranexamic acid, works to interrupt pigment signaling, while ferulic acid, vitamin C, and MASQ-tech to help brighten skin and defend against future discoloration.

🪷 The best part?

You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

During your consultation, we’ll determine what type of pigment you’re dealing with and create a plan that’s customized to your skin.

Healthy, even-toned skin starts with understanding why the pigment formed in the first place.

Stay tuned… next in our Summer Skin Protection Series we’re talking about one of the most overlooked triggers of hyperpigmentation:

🔥 Heat.

Because sometimes it isn’t the sun that’s making your pigment worse.

☀️Skin Protection: Hyperpigmentation Prevention

If you’ve been following along, you know we’ve already talked about SPF and Vitamin C as key players in protecting your skin. Now let’s talk about another important piece of protecting your skin from what is known as hyperpigmentation- overproduction of melanin.

Our star player?

✨ Tyrosinase inhibitors ✨

Tyrosinase is an enzyme located in melanocytes and it is responsible for the production of melanin - the pigment that gives our skin its color as well as our eyes and hair their color. When pigment production becomes overactive due to triggers such as UV exposure, inflammation, hormones, heat, or injury to the skin, it can contribute to harmless hyperpigmentation disorders
like melasma, age/sun spots, uneven skin tone, and freckles.

Tyrosinase inhibitors work by helping to interrupt or slow the process that leads to excess melanin production. Think of them as the workers that help turn down the signals that are telling your skin to produce too much pigment.

They play an important role in both preventing new discoloration from forming and helping improve the appearance of existing uneven pigmentation as part of a professionally guided skincare routine.

But here’s where it gets interesting:

🧐 Not all hyperpigmentation is the same—and not every dark spot should be treated the same way.

Stay tuned because later this week that’s exactly what we’re going to be talking about …….

The different types of hyperpigmentation, what products are recommended to combat them, and why heat—not just the sun—can be a major trigger for stubborn hyperpigmentation . ☀️🔥

💜 Some opportunities feel like accomplishments. Others feel like coming full circle. This is one of those moments.

I am incredibly honored and deeply grateful to share that I have officially been named an Oncology Spa Solutions Official Faculty Trainer & Ambassador and am part of the organization’s very first founding Faculty Team.

This means so much more to me than adding another title or credential behind my name.

My journey into oncology esthetics began from a deeply personal place. After watching my momma, Bobbi, navigate ovarian cancer and seeing firsthand the profound ways cancer and its treatments can affect the skin, body, comfort, confidence, and overall well-being of a person, I knew I wanted to do more.

I wanted to understand more.

I wanted to learn how to provide safe, knowledgeable, compassionate care for those navigating cancer treatment—and for survivors who may continue living with the lasting effects of those treatments months or even years later.

That calling led me to become certified in oncology esthetics, pursue specialized training in oncology massage and manual lymphatic drainage, and make oncology-conscious care an integral part of the heart and mission of Purple Lotus KC Wellness Spa.

And now, that journey has brought me here. 💜

As a member of the founding faculty for Oncology Spa Solutions, I now have the privilege of helping educate and inspire other estheticians and spa professionals to provide safer, more compassionate care for those affected by cancer and medically reactive skin.

I don’t take that responsibility lightly.

There is something incredibly powerful about knowing that the knowledge I share with one professional may go on to touch dozens—or even hundreds—of lives. That by helping another provider understand how to safely care for someone during or after cancer treatment, we are expanding access to the kind of compassionate, specialized care that every person deserves.

To be entrusted with helping carry this mission forward is an honor that is difficult to put into words.

And perhaps the most meaningful part of all is knowing that the journey that began because of my mom is now allowing me to help shape the next generation of oncology-trained professionals.

Mom, this one is for you. 💜🦋

I am so grateful to Becky Brooks-Kuehn and Oncology Spa Solutions for believing in me, trusting me with this role, and welcoming me as part of the very first Legacy Faculty Team. I am incredibly proud to stand alongside other professionals who share the commitment to creating a culture of compassion and advancing safe, knowledgeable oncology esthetics.

This isn’t simply the next chapter in my career.

It is part of the legacy I hope to leave behind.

🪷 You Don’t Have to Apologize Here🪷

There’s been something on my mind lately because of comments I hear almost weekly…

“I’m sorry I haven’t washed my hair”

“I’m sorry I didn’t shave my legs.”

“I’m sorry I came straight from work.”

“I’m sorry I’m so tired…I might just fall asleep.”

“I’m sorry I’ve had to reschedule so many times.”

“I’m sorry it’s been so long since I’ve been in, life’s been hectic.”

“I’m sorry my nails/toes look so bad, I need a mani/pedi.”

The list goes on and on of apologies for, let’s be honest, just being human……

Can I tell you something?

None of those things matter to me.

Not one.

Life is busy.

You’re working.

You’re raising children.

You’re caring for aging parents.

You’re navigating illness.

You’re carrying responsibilities that no one else can see.

Some days, just making it through the door is enough.

My treatment room isn’t a place where you need to earn relaxation.

It’s a place where you get to simply exist. It is a sanctuary of acceptance.

So when arrive for your service, I’d love for you to leave a few things outside the door…

Your apologies.

Your self-criticism.

The pressure to have everything together.

The belief that you have to look a certain way to deserve care.

The feeling that you need to entertain me instead of resting.

If you need sleep…

Please do.

If you come with unwashed hair…

No worries….I’m probably going to get it even more messy during your scalp massage.

If you arrive straight from work…

I’m just glad you’re here.

If life has been heavy…

You don’t have to carry that weight alone for the next hour.

In my bubble…

There is no judgment.

There is no perfection.

There is no need to apologize for being human.

Only space to breathe.

Only space to rest.

Only space to be cared for.

Only space to simply exist.

My hope is that while you’re here, you’ll begin to see yourself the way I see you…

Worthy.

Accepted.

And deserving of compassionate care exactly as you are in this very moment.

I’m glad you’re here just as you are….. WELCOME TO MY BUBBLE OF PEACE

💜Nichole

🍊 We talked about why Vitamin C belongs in your skincare routine… now let’s talk about choosing the right one.

🤔 So you might be asking yourself “but aren’t all vitamin C serums the same?” and the answer is, no.

✨ Different forms of Vitamin C are designed for different skin concerns. Some focus on hydration, others target pigmentation, some are ideal for sensitive or compromised skin, and others combine Vitamin C with ingredients like retinol for more advanced correction.

That’s why I don’t carry just one Vitamin C serum—I carry several professional and tried-and-true products, because every client’s skin has different needs.

❓And if you’re unsure which Vitamin C is right for your skin, I’d love to help you choose the best fit during your next visit or skincare consultation. I’d be happy to help you choose one based on your skin goals—because skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Swipe through to see some of my favorite Vitamin C serums and what makes each one unique. The products featured in this post are the same professional products I trust and use when appropriate in the treatment room. 🍊✨

💜 It’s in the details- what you don’t see

Every appointment begins long before a guest walks through the door.

🧺 Fresh linens.

🧖‍♀️ Warm towels.

🧴 Products thoughtfully selected.

✨ The room prepared with intention.

🕯️ The lighting softened.

🎶 The music quietly playing.

To some, it’s just a facial or a massage.

💆‍♀️ To me, it’s creating a space where someone can finally let their shoulders drop, take a deep breath, and simply be.

Those quiet moments before your appointment matter just as much as the treatment itself.

Because caring for people doesn’t begin when you arrive.

It begins as we prepare for you to arrive.

☀️ You’ve started wearing your SPF… now let’s talk about Vitamin C.

One of the most common questions I hear is:

“If I already wear sunscreen, do I really need Vitamin C?”

The answer is…yes! 💜

Think of them as the perfect team.

🧴 Broad spectrum SPF helps shield your skin from UV rays that cause speed up the signs of aging (UVA) and damages the skin with burning (UVB).

🍊 Vitamin C helps defend your skin against the damage that still occurs from everyday environmental stressors as well as fights against the free radicals caused by UV radiation that sneak past your SPF’s barrier.

Here are 4 reasons Vitamin C deserves a place in your morning skincare routine:

🍊 1. It helps neutralize free radicals.
UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental stressors create unstable molecules called free radicals. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize them before they contribute to visible skin damage.

✨ 2. It helps brighten the complexion.
Vitamin C supports a more even-looking skin tone and can help improve the appearance of dullness and discoloration over time.

🌿 3. It supports healthy collagen.
Collagen is what helps keep skin looking firm and youthful. Vitamin C plays an essential role in collagen production while helping defend existing collagen from environmental damage.

☀️ 4. It works best with your SPF—not instead of it.
Think of SPF as your skin’s first line of defense and Vitamin C as your backup support. Together they provide more complete protection against the daily factors that contribute to premature aging and uneven skin tone.

💜 When should you apply Vitamin C?

✔️ Cleanser
✔️ Vitamin C Serum
✔️ Moisturizer
✔️ Broad-Spectrum SPF

Consistency is key. Small steps every morning can make a remarkable difference in your skin over time.

👇 Tell me in the comments…

Do you already use a Vitamin C serum every morning, or is this something you’re thinking about adding to your routine?
