Kurl Talk: Alopecia Awareness Month 🤎
Alopecia doesn’t have one face. In this episode, we’re breaking down three types of hair loss: traction alopecia, CCCA, and telogen effluvium.
First up is traction alopecia. Let’s talk about what it is, what can cause it, and why paying attention to the health of your hair and scalp matters. As Alopecia Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re continuing the conversation and encouraging you to pay attention to your hair and scalp.
Stay tuned for part 2: CCCA and telogen effluvium.
Hey Kurlies! Let’s talk about HEAT DAMAGE! Your hair can LOOK healthy straight and still be showing signs of heat damage. 👀
And this is a perfect example.
When her hair is straight, it’s shiny, smooth, has movement, and doesn’t necessarily “look damaged.” But once we wet the hair 50 % of her hair does not naturally curl on its own. When we try to style her hair in its natural state, we get a completely different story. (Sorry don’t get any videos wet, but I will next time 😭)
Many of her hair strands especially at the crown forward have lost elasticity and no longer respond like the rest of her natural texture. They won’t curl, define, or even hold a twist properly because repeated heat exposure has altered the way those strands behave.
Let’s make one thing clear!!🔥 Heat damage doesn’t always mean:
Dry hair
Split ends
Excessive breakage
Hair that looks unhealthy
Sometimes the biggest sign is simply that your hair no longer reverts or performs the way it naturally should.
This is also why I pay attention to more than just how your hair looks. I’m watching how it feels, stretches, recoils, responds to water, and holds a natural style.
You can have hair that looks beautiful when straight while still having compromised areas when you want to wear your curls.
✨ Healthy looking hair and healthy functioning hair aren’t always the same thing.
If wearing your natural texture is important to you, your heat routine matters 🤎. If wearing your natural texture isn’t a priority I believe you most certainly can still achieve healthy growing hair with being a straight natural.

Hey Kurlies 💕 Alopecia doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style to protect your hair. 🤎
This French roll pin up with flat twists has officially become one of our signature looks for this Kurlie and for good reason!
Flat twists give us the ability to strategically work with her existing density and coverage, allowing us to seamlessly camouflage areas affected by alopecia without compromising the integrity of her hair.
Instead of forcing the hair into a style it can’t comfortably support, we customize the placement, direction, and tension of each twist based on what her hair needs.
✨ Minimal tension on vulnerable areas
✨ Protective styling with her natural hair
✨ Strategic coverage without added hair
✨ Less daily manipulation
✨ A polished style that still feels like HER
And that French roll? It gives us the perfect finishing touch….elegant, timeless, and intentional.
When working with alopecia, the goal isn’t simply to “cover it up.” It’s learning how to style around the hair loss while protecting and preserving the hair that’s still there.
Healthy hair first. Beautiful styling right alongside it. 🤎
