Let’s talk about the cases that don’t go as planned.
Not every artist will show you these cases, but I think they matter just as much as the wins.
This client’s vitiligo had been stable and inactive, which is something I require before considering camouflage tattooing. After the first session, we saw what looked like some early color retention. But after a second session and allowing everything to fully heal, it became clear that his skin simply wasn’t holding the ink the way we had hoped.
So why can this happen?
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition. The immune system mistakenly targets melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing our natural skin color. When those cells are destroyed, we see the areas of lost pigmentation we recognize as vitiligo.
Tattoo ink doesn’t replace those missing melanocytes. We’re introducing a foreign material into skin that has been affected by an autoimmune process. Even when vitiligo appears completely stable, we can’t see or predict everything happening at an immune level or exactly how that individual’s skin will respond. This may be one reason ink retention can be unpredictable.
It doesn’t necessarily mean the immune system is “attacking the ink” the same way it attacks melanocytes, but it does mean there is no guarantee of how well that skin will retain it.

One of the things I love most about what I do is improving something that has been bothering someone and helping them feel more confident in their skin. So when I’ve done everything I can and the skin simply doesn’t respond the way we hoped, it’s disappointing. I care about the outcome, and I care about the person who trusted me to try.
But part of caring is also knowing when to stop.
Vitiligo camouflage can be successful for the right candidate. Every person’s skin and immune response are different, and unfortunately, there’s no way to guarantee exactly how someone will retain the ink.
Sometimes we get the result we hoped for. Sometimes the skin tells us otherwise.
I believe you deserve honesty about both. 🤍

Scar camouflage on an upper blepharoplasty scar. 🤍
An upper blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid, often done to correct drooping eyelids or for cosmetic reasons. It can leave a fine scar along the eyelid crease, and scar tissue in this delicate area can be tricky to work with.
This one actually took more sessions than usual for me, and it was the first time I’ve worked on this specific type of scar. Softening the color and getting it to blend into the surrounding skin took some patience, but we got there, and both my client and I are so happy with the results.
Every scar teaches me something new, and this one was a genuinely fun challenge to work through.

At the end of this month, I turn 48. 🤍
And honestly? My calendar and my body remind me of that a lot more than my soul does. I always feel like I’m just a 30-something girl who happens to be walking around in a 48-year-old body. Time has this way of catching up to us so quietly, little by little, until one day you catch your reflection and don’t fully recognize the person looking back. We get used to seeing ourselves a certain way, and then the years start to change our face, our features, our hair, our bodies... and it’s hard, if I’m being honest.
But I’m grateful. Grateful that God has given me another year to keep growing, keep learning, keep becoming. I don’t think my mind or my soul will ever quite catch up to my actual age, and maybe that’s okay.
I feel so lucky to get to celebrate another birthday surrounded by some of my favorite people, friends who have walked through so much life with me over the years. Thank you for growing older alongside me.

Would you have guessed this is just ONE session in? 👀
This client had a thigh lift after major weight loss, and this scar has been there for years since her body contouring surgery. One session of scar camouflage, and you can already see the color evening out and blending into the surrounding skin. Session two is already on the books to keep building on this progress.

Not every ar**la restoration follows a mastectomy.
This client came to me after a breast reduction. The surgery healed beautifully, but she lost pigment through parts of her ar**la patches where the color just never came back. Up close, the shape had disappeared into the surrounding skin.
So we rebuilt it. Color matched to her own tone, worked back into the areas that lost it, edges redefined until the shape read whole again.
This is after one session. Her second is done and she’s healing now, which is when the real settling happens color softens, tone evens out. What you see today is not what you’ll see in six weeks.
Pigment loss after a reduction is more common than people think, and it’s fixable. You don’t have to live with it.

Burn scars can heal thicker than other types of scar tissue, which means the skin itself behaves differently under the needle. That was the case for this client’s lower calf. Thicker tissue takes more time and care to saturate properly, and it’s a balance: you want enough pigment to neutralize the discoloration, but not so much that it looks obvious or unnatural once healed.
This is why patience matters with scar work. We build gradually, session by session, always aiming for a result that heals soft and blends in rather than one that reads as “tattooed.”
