October in Maine is beautiful.
It's also apparently the month when we collectively decide to move everything we own. π
Patio furniture.
Air conditioners.
Garden supplies.
Firewood.
Summer equipment.
Leaf bags.
Things from the shed to the garage and things from the garage to... somewhere else in the garage.
Add raking, bending, reaching, lifting and hauling, and your body is doing a LOT right now.
Treat fall cleanup like physical activityβbecause it is.
Pace yourself.
Lift carefully.
Switch sides.
Take breaks.
And listen when your body tells you it's had enough.

We talk a lot about caring for people through difficult seasons.
Illness.
Anxiety.
Pain.
Caregiving.
Recovery.
And we will keep talking about those things.
But here's something else we believe:
You don't have to be struggling to deserve care.
You can be happy.
Healthy.
Having a great week.
Enjoying your life.
And still decide that an hour spent taking care of your body sounds wonderful.
Care doesn't have to begin with a crisis.
Sometimes it can simply be part of a life you're enjoying. π

Monday morning:
"Why does my back hurt?"
Let's review the weekend...
Raked the yard.
Moved the patio furniture.
Put away the air conditioners.
Dragged things into the garage.
Cleaned out the garden.
Carried approximately 83 pounds of leaves across the yard because making two trips was apparently unacceptable.
Mystery solved. π
Fall chores are a workout.
Treat them like one.
Warm up. Switch sides. Take breaks. Lift carefully.
And give those muscles some recovery afterward.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
For people undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment, even something as ordinary as massage can suddenly feel complicated.
Is it safe?
Will my therapist understand what my body has been through?
Do I need to explain everything?
That's why specialized training matters.
Our office has training and experience in oncology massage, allowing massage to be thoughtfully adapted to the individual, their treatment history, and what their body needs that day.
We aren't going to spend October talking about this every day.
We simply want the people who need this kind of care to know:
It's here. π
Openings for the week!! Monday the 5th at 830, or 930. And Tuesday the 6th at 830!

There's something about October in Maine.
Cool mornings.
Warm drinks.
Apples.
Cinnamon.
Sweaters you forgot you owned.
Trees putting on an absolutely ridiculous show. π
It's also a season that seems to invite us to slow down a little.
Your body may be ready for that, too.
You don't have to be injured.
You don't have to be overwhelmed.
You don't even have to have a particular reason.
Sometimes taking care of yourself can simply feel good.
And that's reason enough. π

Client:
"I really don't carry much stress."
Shoulders:
π§±π§±π§±
Jaw:
π
Neck:
"Don't bring me into this."
π
The body has absolutely no loyalty when it comes to keeping your secrets.

And just like that...
October in Maine. π
Beautiful leaves.
Cool mornings.
Sweaters.
Apple c***r.
And every tree in the state preparing to dump its entire wardrobe onto our lawns. π
Enjoy the season.
Take the hike.
Pick the apples.
Rake the leaves.
Just remember that your body is participating in all of those lovely fall activities, too.
Take breaks.
Switch sides.
Stretch.
Hydrate.
And maybe don't attempt to carry the entire leaf tarp in one trip just because you technically can.
Your lower back would like a word. π

A small piece of advice that could make your body much happier this fall:
Switch sides when you rake.
Most of us have a favorite side.
So we rake...
and rake...
and rake...
using the same shoulder, twisting the same direction, and asking the same muscles to do all the work.
Then we wonder why one side of our back is furious the next morning. π
Switch hands.
Change direction.
Take breaks.
Your yard doesn't care how quickly you finish.
Your back absolutely does.
