There's no legal definition of clean beauty or clean ingredients. Brands use the term to signal values, but it doesn't guarantee safety, efficacy, or any measurable outcomes.
An ingredient isn't inherently safe or harmful in isolation. Concentration, formulation context, and skin compatibility determine safety, not marketing language.
Natural doesn't mean safe. Synthetic doesn't mean harmful. Poison ivy is natural. Many synthetic molecules are gentler on skin than their natural counterparts.
Look for brands that list full INCI names, explain why ingredients are included, and provide context. Clean tells you nothing. Ingredient disclosure tells you everything.
