On a recent trip through SE Asia, I, Maria, felt a deep pull to be fully immersed in nature. We chose Borneo, and the ancient rainforest of Danum Valley—one of the oldest on Earth.

Being surrounded by such raw, untouched wildlife felt like stepping into a dream. But it also awakened something deeper… a knowing of just how fragile this ecosystem truly is—and how deeply connected we all are to it, no matter where we live.

Every choice we make matters. Especially how we spend our money.

When we buy products containing palm oil, we are often unknowingly supporting deforestation—the clearing of vast, living ecosystems to make way for monocrops. This has devastating effects: the loss of biodiversity, the displacement of wildlife, and the decline of essential pollinators like bees and butterflies.

What happens thousands of miles away doesn’t stay there. It impacts our air, our food systems, our climate… and ultimately, our own well-being.

There’s a deeper loss too. As we destroy these natural environments, we lose part of our connection—to nature, to animals, and to something within ourselves.

Yes, “sustainable palm oil” exists—but from what I witnessed, it really is not enough. But we do have the power to change this and bring an even bigger change. This really is just the beginning and there are efforts being made to protect what remains. Which I am so proud of.
