Between barber visits, the simplest beard habit is consistency. Comb or brush it in the direction you want it to sit, keep the outline tidy without chasing it higher every day, and avoid turning a small cleanup into an accidental redesign.
When the shape starts getting away from you, that is usually a good time to let the barber take over.
