ONE YEAR OF PRESIDENT MUTHARIKA IN OFFICE: MALAWIANS NEED ANSWERS

PIDO International has taken note of President Peter Mutharika’s interview with MBC yesterday. However, we found the interview disappointing, irrelevant and disconnected from the realities facing ordinary Malawians.

At a time when citizens are experiencing persistent fuel shortages and long queues, forex shortages, electricity blackouts, water shortages, high living costs, and shortages of medicines in public hospitals, we expected the interview to focus on these pressing national concerns.

Instead, the President largely spoke about his first year in office and highlighted achievements such as food security and road maintenance. While such achievements may be acknowledged, Malawians need more than a report card on one year in office—they need clear answers and practical solutions to the problems affecting their daily lives.

PIDO International asks:

What is government doing to end the fuel and forex crises?

When will the persistent electricity and water problems be seriously addressed?

What concrete measures are being taken to address shortages of medicines in hospitals?

What is being done to fight corruption and ensure public resources are protected?

And importantly, what is the true state of the working relationship between President Mutharika and Vice-President? Does the President fully understand and know what the Vice-President is going through?

We are also concerned by the President’s limited public engagement during a period when Malawians desperately need reassurance and leadership. The President must speak to the nation regularly, especially when the country is facing serious challenges.

Malawians are not asking for political marks. They are asking for answers, accountability and action.

PIDO International therefore calls upon the President to engage the nation openly and explain what his government is doing to address these challenges.

I am a LUANAR student ndikusowekera tuition fees, 1.3 million k*t ndimalize 4th yanga.

My school journey started in 2021 when I joined LUANAR- Bunda Campus for a 4-year program ( Horticulture). I was supposed to finish last year 2025, but in 2024, anandiyimitsa because of fees ndinalibe just because loans board sananditenge. Therefore I was forced to wait for one year but unfortunately our program was phasing out and zinapangitsa k*t pasakhale 4th year in the following year and I was told to wait for the 3rd year students k*t afike 4th year then I will join them. As ndadikira for 2 years pakhomo.

This year, I resumed my studies on 31st August until last Friday, 18th September, when I was told that tuition fee ndilipilira ndekha.

I'm really stranded right now. I can't manage to source 650k for this semester, but I really want to finish my studies .

I have already stayed 5 years at LUANAR for a 4-year program, and I was hoping to finish next year, but andiyimitsaso.

Today we had the best field visit ever!

We visited a woman we rescued from human trafficking. After counselling and reintegration, we supported her with capital to start a business.

Look at her now! She now owns a shoe business for men and women and she is doing AMAZINGLY well!

We were so proud that we bought several pairs of shoes from her own shop to give to other girls at our safe house.

From survivor to supporter, this is what true transformation looks like.
