Time to discuss a skin sin I hear about often! Do you not use a moisturizer because your makeup primer claims to be a moisturizer as well? What about sunscreen? Do you skip the SPF because your foundation is SPF 15? If so- you’re committing a skin sin. 😬 Makeup products are not a replacement for quality skincare. The amount of moisturizing ingredients or sunscreen in makeup isn’t adequate to be a replacement. Adding a separate moisturizer into your skincare routine will inevitably help your makeup look better because your skin will be properly hydrated and have less dry, and flaky patches. Also, using a separate sunscreen of SPF 30, or 50, will help your skin in every aspect. Sunscreen is the best anti-aging product on the market. Any skincare routine is not complete without sun protection that is executed properly. Adding sunscreen to your skincare routine will definitely save you money in the long run. The more you protect your skin now- the less money you are going to have to spend in the future to buy full coverage foundation and concealer to cover brown sun spots. And, it will save you from having to get laser treatments for sun damaged skin or even skin cancer procedures. You don’t have to have a lot of steps to a quality skincare routine, if you don’t want to. I recommend having a cleanser for your skin type, a moisturizer to address your level of hydration needed, and a sunscreen to protect your skin. That’s it! Please consider having these staple products in your skincare routine to make your makeup application that much better!

We’re (finally) starting to get some fall weather! That means pumpkin spice latte, boots, & sweaters! It also means the air is becoming drier, colder, & the humidity drops significantly. How can we combat the dryness of our skin this time of year? It’s a good idea to bump up the moisturizer to a thicker cream consistency to keep as much moisture in your skin as you can- and using a thicker eye creme will keep your delicate eye area from becoming dry. Another great product to add is a hyaluronic acid product to hold onto all the water- it’s best to use a hyaluronic acid serum & follow that with your thicker moisturizer to lock in all the moisture. Also getting a humidifier for you bedroom to prevent the air from getting too dry is a great way to help your skin, & allergies, during these colder months.

Exfoliation is the step of your skincare routine that’s going to reveal brighter, more youthful & even skin. But- there can be too much of a good thing. Using an exfoliant that is too harsh, or over exfoliating can both cause damage to the skin, & compromise the skin’s barrier function- which works to keep the skin balanced & happy. Every person is different & can tolerate different types of exfoliation & amount of exfoliating. I recommend starting with 1-2 times a week & seeing how your skin reacts. If you experience tingling, burning, redness, peeling, or increased sensitivity- decrease how often you exfoliate or the kind you use. We all want to have glowing skin, but that doesn’t come from scrubbing the life out of your skin. Glowing skin comes from cleansing, proper exfoliation, moisturizer, & sun protection.

Let’s talk about collagen and elastin! So what are they? Collagen is the most plentiful protein in the skin. Collagen gives the skin its strength. Elastin is like an elastic that keeps the skin structure after being stretched and gives skin firmness. Collagen and elastin are responsible for keeping your skin looking youthful and keeping wrinkles and fine lines away. As we age, environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and sun damage our bodies don’t produce as much of the proteins. After the age of 20 we start to produce 1% less collagen each year. Because of the lessening of collagen- our skin becomes thinner and more fragile resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. So how can we work to maintain our levels of collagen and elastin? Stop smoking, wear sunscreen daily, exercise and eat a healthy diet, stay hydrated, and use skincare products that have peptides, Vitamin C, and antioxidants
