Most people think Medicare covers healthcare. It covers some healthcare, and the gap catches people off guard at the worst possible time.

Here are nine costs you could still be responsible for.

Long-term custodial care. Medicare does not pay for help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or eating over the long term. This is often the single biggest gap people don't plan for.

Dental care. Routine cleanings, fillings, crowns, and dentures are not covered.

Vision care. Routine eye exams, glasses, contacts, and most eyewear related expenses are not covered.

Hearing aids and exams. Hearing exams and hearing aids are not covered, except in limited situations.

Massage therapy. Medicare does not cover massage therapy or most alternative therapies.

Travel expenses. Medicare does not pay for transportation to or from your medical appointments.

Most prescription drugs. Part A and Part B do not cover most prescription medications. You need Part D for that.

Routine foot care. Routine foot care and podiatry services are not covered unless medically necessary.

Care outside the US. Medicare does not cover health care received outside the United States.
