Cuticles behave this way because they are protective tissue designed to seal and defend the area where the nail grows. When the fingertip experiences repeated stress such as biting, friction, pressure, seasonal stiffness, or reduced movement, the body responds by signaling the cuticle to grow forward and thicken in an attempt to reinforce that seal. Forward growth makes the cuticle tighter and less mobile against the nail plate and surrounding skin, which increases mechanical tension at the nail folds. Skin cannot tolerate unlimited tension, so once that tension exceeds what the tissue can handle, it splits, lifts, or breaks down. What appears as sudden damage is actually the predictable result of protective growth that has been allowed to overextend without regular maintenance to keep the tissue flexible and mobile.
