MASSAGE EDUCATORS: THE SEMINAR ISN’T ABOUT YOU.

Over the years, we’ve heard some pretty disappointing stories from therapists attending continuing-education seminars.

Instructors who refuse to take questions.

Instructors who advertise a full-day workshop and finish three or four hours early because they’ve run out of material.

Instructors who barely work in the field anymore—and sometimes brag about not maintaining a massage practice.

Instructors teaching other professionals after having barely two years of real-world experience themselves.

Instructors who advertise one subject, then spend significant portions of the workshop teaching unrelated material to show what else they know.

Instructors repeatedly reminding the room about who they’ve worked with, what teams they’ve treated, or where they’ve worked.

And one that really stood out to me:

A seminar where the students barely got to practice.

Instead, the instructor continually demonstrated technique after technique, showing the room how he performs massage.

But here’s the problem:

The students weren’t there to watch the instructor do massage.

They were there to learn how to do it themselves.

Hands-on education requires hands-on time.

Demonstrate the technique.

Explain the why.

Let the students practice.

Observe them.

Correct them.

Answer questions.

Then practice again.

An instructor’s job isn’t to spend eight hours demonstrating how talented they are.

It’s to transfer their knowledge and skills to the people who paid to learn from them.

There’s nothing wrong with having an impressive résumé.

There’s nothing wrong with being highly skilled.

And there’s nothing wrong with demonstrating your expertise.

But your expertise is the starting point of good teaching—not the objective.

Your students didn’t pay to leave impressed by how good you are.

They paid to leave better at what they do.

The seminar isn’t your stage.
It’s their classroom.

Building a successful massage practice is a process.

Of course, you need to be great at what you do—that’s a given. But one of the biggest mistakes I see therapists make is neglecting the business side of massage.

Unfortunately, being the “best therapist” doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll build the most successful practice.

Often, the therapists who succeed are the ones who know how to communicate their value, build a network, create a professional brand, market themselves, and develop long-term relationships.

Your hands-on skills matter enormously. But so do the soft skills that allow people to discover you, trust you, refer to you, and keep coming back.

Don’t just work on becoming a better therapist. Work on becoming better at the business of being a therapist.

The Thomas Test is one of the most underused assessment tools in manual therapy and movement.

How often are you using it in your practice?

Do you feel it gives you enough information to confidently build your treatment sessions, or are you only scratching the surface?

Originally developed by Dr. Hugh Owen Thomas, a pioneering British orthopedic surgeon in the late 1800s, the Thomas Test was designed to identify hip flexion contractures. Over time, it has become one of the most valuable clinical assessments for understanding hip mobility, pelvic position, and movement dysfunction.

But here’s the thing…

The test is only as valuable as your ability to interpret it.

A simple assessment can reveal compensations in the hip flexors, re**us femoris, TFL, adductors, and even provide clues about lumbar spine mechanics. When you know what you’re looking at, it becomes the starting point for a treatment that feels precise rather than guesswork.

That’s exactly why we spend so much time on it in Flow Stretch Level 2—not just how to perform the test, but how to translate your findings into effective hands-on treatment techniques that produce immediate changes your clients can feel.

👇 Do you use the Thomas Test regularly? What’s the biggest thing it helps you identify in your clients?

Flow Stretch Level 2 Online is coming soon.

We also have three more live seminars this year if you’d like to learn in person.

Online education is always available for practitioners who want to level up their assessment and treatment skills.
