Check yourself. Every month. Women and men both, because early detection saves lives.

How do you do a breast self exam at home?
Use the flat pads of your fingers, not the tips. Move in a consistent pattern over the whole breast, into the armpit, and up to the collarbone. Check lying down and standing up. We linked our full video walking through it step by step.

How often should you check?
Once a month. Pick the same time each month so it becomes routine and you build a real sense of your baseline.

Why does knowing your baseline matter?
You can only notice a change if you know what normal feels like for you. Breasts can feel different at different points in the menstrual cycle, so check at the same time each month.

Do men need to check too?
Yes. Male breast cancer is uncommon, but it happens, and men are often diagnosed later because nobody ever told them to look.

What are you actually feeling for?
A lump, thickening, skin dimpling, ni**le changes, or anything that is new for you. Most changes turn out to be nothing.

What should you do if you find something?
Do not panic and do not wait. Call your physician and get it evaluated. Many breast lumps turn out to be benign, but only a medical evaluation can tell you for sure.

Does a self exam replace a mammogram?
No. Self exams are awareness, not screening. Talk to your physician about when regular imaging should start for you based on your age, history, and risk factors.
