☀️ Summer Toe PSA ☀️

Ladies, since we’re right in the middle of summer, I wanted to take a minute to talk about something that’s really important.

If you have any type of enhancement on your toenails and you accidentally stub your toe, drop something on it, or jam it really hard, please don’t just leave the product on and hope for the best. Reach out to your nail tech and have them take a look.

The client in these photos actually came to me like this. I did not do this toenail, nor did I apply any product to it.

After looking at it, it was pretty clear the toenail had experienced some trauma and had lifted away from the nail bed (called onycholysis). Once that happens, there’s now a little pocket underneath the nail. If an enhancement stays on, water and moisture can get trapped in that space, and that’s where bacteria love to grow.

That’s what happened here.

The green discoloration you’re seeing is what’s commonly called a “greenie,” which is caused by Pseudomonas bacteria. You’ll notice this one is a very dark green, almost black. While the color doesn’t tell us it’s in a certain “stage,” it does suggest this had likely been going on for quite a while before the nail was ever properly assessed.

Instead of putting more product over it, I cleaned the nail up, applied cuticle oil, explained everything to my client, and sent her home with no product on that toe. Sometimes the best thing we can do is let the nail heal.

I know it’s tempting to just keep your toes looking pretty, especially during sandal season, but your nail health always comes first.

So if you ever injure a toe while wearing enhancements, don’t be afraid to message me. I’d much rather remove the product, make sure everything looks healthy, and reassure you than cover up something that could become a much bigger issue later.

Sometimes it’s nothing at all… but sometimes catching it early can save you months of growing out a damaged nail. 💚
