Every time I think of my parents who immigrated to America in the 80s, I think about resilience, strength and power. My parents left El Salvador when the Salvadoran civil war was happening. (​​The war left around 75,000 people killed, and between 5,000-10,000 missing. Thousands became victims of torture and sexual abuse, and more than 20% of the country’s total population was displaced).⁠⁠

I asked my mom what that was like...She said curfews were in place so you could not leave your home after a certain hour and her university had closed- leaving her one semester short of achieving her degree in Sociology. Unable to finish her degree, my father and her left for America to pursue a better life for themselves and their future family. ⁠⁠

America, the land where dreams are made and opportunities are given. The truth is coming to America is hard and far from the “American Dream”. It means you have to assimilate to a culture so different from your own. Learn a new language and feel like an outsider. Also, let's not forget about racism. Having to start over because you have to, because there is no better option. Everytime I think of my parents and immigrants leaving their country, I am flabbergasted by the level of strength in their souls. ⁠⁠

Something NO ONE but an immigrant can understand or feel. All while smiling and giving their all to their family. So for that, YES immigrants are STRONG AS HELL, POWERFUL and HEROS. ⁠⁠
