You may have heard the term or seen products labelled as “soap free”, but what does this mean?
“Soap free” can be confusing to personal care users. It does not mean that they will not clean the dirt from your skin, they still do this but tend to be less harsh on the skin.
Soap free cleansers are made without the fat or oil and alkaline components of traditional soap products. Alternatives are used to create a pH-balanced and much more gentle product that is more suitable for sensitive and dry skin.

Some research has suggested that over-washing could potentially be damage and disrupt the natural balance our skin microbiome.
Showering and using shampoo and soaps every day could strip your scalp and skin of important microbes and decrease the natural balance and diversity of your microbiome. This can lead to dry and itchy skin and scalp, which you will want to avoid!
Three tips to protect your skin:
Use products with minimal ingredients
Avoid long hot showers, try to take shorter and lukewarm showers instead
Always apply moisturizer after showering

The skin barrier and the skin microbiome are both vital to the maintenance of skin health, and are often talked about in the skincare industry. However, they are distinctly different and not to be confused!
The skin microbiome is composed of living microorganisms, but the skin barrier is made up of dead skin cells and lipids.
The skin microbiome works to support the immune system, protects against harmful pathogens to fight infection and inflammation. The skin barrier helps to protect the skin’s moisture and protects against environmental and external triggers.
A weakened skin microbiome can lead to an imbalance of harmful bacteria and cause various skin conditions and infections. A weakened skin barrier can correlate with loss of moisture and skin sensitivity, and make it easier for pathogenic bacteria to colonise skin.

Research has suggested that sea water could actually change your skin microbiome!
Results showed that sea water could temporarily change the natural composition of microbes on the skin and replace these with bacteria from the sea.
