A personal struggle turned into a global brand. ✨

Meet Candera Thompson, founder of and one of our latest Media Grant winners.

After experiencing severe postpartum hair loss, Candera couldn’t find products that addressed what women were actually going through. So she built her own.

What started as DIY remedies shared in online communities grew into a brand rooted in real consumer need, cultural insight, and lived experience.

She didn’t start with traditional funding or a built-in network. Candera taught herself everything — from product formulation to marketing — while raising her children and building a business from scratch.

She is a powerful example of building with grace and resilience. Motherhood didn’t slow her down; it sharpened her focus, forcing her to prioritize what truly mattered and build with intention.

Today, Bask & Bloom Essentials is a global award-winning brand helping women reclaim confidence, embrace natural beauty, and navigate postpartum change.

This is what community-led disruption looks like.

We are in !!! 🙌🏽💚💃🏾

There are so many layers to my journey but one of them stems from the oncology (cancer) lab! 🧪🥼

While at , I receive the experience through the PREP program to create a nano particle delivery system for my research project.

I remember going to the lab as early as 3 am in the morning to check on my infusion. 👩🏽‍🔬

Never would I have imagined that almost a decade later, I would start my own business where we manufacture our products in my home state of Mississippi!

All I can say is that He is intentional!!! 🥺
