The field of dermatology will always be a busy one, given the simple fact that no two people seem to have exactly the same skin type. The cosmetics industry banks on this, offering skin care products for every skin type imaginable, from excessively dry to oily and everything in between.
Oily skin can strike anyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender or geographic location. A myriad of factors cause or exacerbate oily skin, including humidity, a poor face cleansing regimen and even exposure to cigarette smoke. Some people are genetically predisposed to oily skin, whereas many others experience a hike in oil production at certain stages in their life, such as during the teenage years. Additionally, women who are pregnant, going through menopause or taking birth control pills are especially susceptible to oily skin.
What are the effects of having oily skin? People who suffer from it might feel greasy a few hours after a shower. Women with oily complexions might find that their makeup wears off more easily, requiring them to reapply it multiple times per day. Oily skin is also a magnet for dirt and dust, which quickly accrue and clog pores. Clogged pores lead to acne, blackheads and other skin imperfections.
Think all hope is lost? HowStuffWorks has put together a list of tips for cleansing oily skin, debunking some well-known skin care myths along the way. And there is some good news for oily skin sufferers. Oil-slicked complexions tend to stand the test of time better than dry ones, resulting in a younger-looking appearance with fewer lines and wrinkles.
10 Tips for Caring for Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, you are prone to acne, blackheads and spots. Your skin probably looks shiny and thick. Just as with any skin type, taking certain precautions and special care can help reduce skin problems.
The following are 10 tips for taking care of oily skin.
Wash your face twice a day – once in the morning and once before bed. Washing more often can strip your skin of all the natural moisturizers and increase oil production. The only time you should wash your face more than twice a day is if you have been perspiring.
Use a gentle cleanser. If you need something stronger, look for ingredients specifically made for oily skin and acne, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acid. Although usually marketed for acne, these products work well for oily skin too.
If you are experimenting with different cleansers to find one that works for you, keep a notebook and write down the date, what cleanser you are using and keep track of how your skin looks after a few weeks. If you notice irritation, write that down so you know not to try that cleanser again.
Don’t scrub your face as this can stimulate oil production.
If you use a toner, use it only on areas that are oily, such as your forehead or around your nose. If you have areas that aren’t oily, toners can create dry patches.
If you have oil build up in between facial washings, use a medicated pad or blotting paper to remove excess oil. These products have the added benefit of being portable, allowing you to freshen up your face no matter where you are.
Oily skin still needs to be moisturized, but be careful to choose the right moisturizer. Look for water based or oil-free moisturizers and stay away from creams and heavy moisturizers.
When choosing foundation and other make-up, pick those with gel, liquid or powder bases. If using a liquid make-up make sure it is water based, not oil based. Makeup labeled “noncomedongenic” contain ingredients that won’t clog your pores.
Exfoliate once a week to help loosen and remove dirt and oil in your pores.
No matter how tempted, don’t pick, pop or squeeze pimples as it can cause scarring and leave red spots on your face.

ome say women are the more sensitive than men, and it’s definitely true when it comes to your face.Bar Soap or Liquid Cleansers for Men
Most men prefer bars to liquid cleansers. That’s fine as long as you have normal or oily skin. But bar soap tends to dry skin out more than liquid cleansers. If you insist on bar soap, look for moisturizing soaps with emollients such as glycerin. Many are made with vitamin E oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil.
You may experience problems with acne if you have very oily skin. Acne is caused by excess oil production that clogs pores, causing inflammation.
Look for soaps or liquid cleansers that contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or benzyl peroxide. All three of these exfoliating agents remove the upper layers of dead skin and allow for deeper cleaning of pores. They also have antibacterial properties.
Moisturizers for Men
Some soaps are laced with moisturizer, and for some men they work just fine. But the surest way to moisten your skin after washing it is to apply a moisturizer.
For dry skin, choose a cream, which is the thickest formulation.
For normal skin, reach for a lotion, which is lighter and less oily.
For oily skin, choose a skin toner or gel.
A healthy and balanced diet can shield your insides from all sorts of bad health mojo. But it can also protect your outside. The right vegetables, nuts, seeds, oils, fish, teas, and chocolates can shield your skin from the ravages of the environment, time, and even cancer. To address every skin woe, from wrinkles, to acne, to dryness, click through this slideshow. One the most important components of a healthy skin diet is vitamin A. One of the best places to get it is low-fat dairy products. In fact, experts say that the health of our skin cells is dependent on dietary vitamin A.
Nutrition expert Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, says it's doubly important to eat A-rich dairy foods if you have either diabetes or a thyroid condition.
"Many people who have these problems can't convert the beta-carotene to vitamin A, which is the form found in many foods that we normally associate with this vitamin, such as carrots," says Lipski, the founder and director of InnovativeHealing.com and the author of Digestive Wellness.
The A in dairy products, she says, is "true A," so everyone's skin can use it.
The common link between these four foods is their high antioxidant content. In a study recently published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, these four fruits weighed in with the highest "total antioxidant capacity" of any food. The benefits of these foods for a healthy skin diet are plentiful.
5 Skincare Secrets
Growing up as a teenager, you would never think that taking care of your skin is a must. All you care about is having enormous amounts of fun. Even if you are a model at the tender age of 16, you are most likely not thinking about healthy skin because you are consumed by all of the beautiful things surrounding you.
Well, once I hit my late teens and headed into my early 20s, things started to get a little hectic. Let's just say puberty started to make its home. After a while I noticed my skin started to have blemishes. This is when I started to take better care of my skin, and I found these tips and regimens to work.
1. Drink lots of water. We all know its cliché to say drink water every day because it is healthy for you, but honestly it is the truth and a definite way to start on the road to healthy skin and a healthier life. I find drinking water especially with two sliced lemons really started to change my skin for the better.
2. Eat healthy. Everyone tries to go on a diet for a healthy way of living. I have traveled the world and no one seem to be as big on dietary supplements more than America, but I will say we can choose what we eat wisely. A lot of us have our guilty pleasures as far as fried foods and candy. I am not telling you to stop eating them but I am telling you to practice portion control. Instead of eating fatty foods high in sodium everyday, why not just eat them once a week. Doing this will also help your digestive system. Most cases of bad skin come from the things we eat, so pay closer attention to that than you normally do.
3. Exfoliate regularly. Keeping your skin exfoliated is something we all know we should be doing. Good exfoliating methods and products that have worked for myself include the very affordable. To recreate my homemade exfoliator, you will need a bar of soap (non-sensitive to the skin like Sabon NYC olive oil soap or Dove), table salt and a white washcloth. Rinse your face with warm water, and then pour one tablespoon of salt into the palm of one hand and mix it with the bar of soap. Make sure the soap is wet to form a rich lather. You need for the salt to settle into something and it can't do that if it is dry. Massage your face with the solution in an upward motion because gravity is what causes your skin to wrinkle, sag and age faster. Rinse your face clean with warm water and wipe with a hot white washcloth. You will see everything that you scrubbed off of your face is no longer there.
4. Keep your skin moisturized. Having healthy skin is amazing but having healthy, moist skin is even better. The moisturizer I always keep in my bag is Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré. This "face maker" is so moist and works well with other products. I promise you won't be disappointed and the best thing is that you only need small amount. It also works great as a skin repair agent.
5. Hold the rays. As you all may know I do have albinism and keeping from the suns rays is a must in my life. Everyone loves to lie out in the sun to get a nice bronze tan. Well I've got advice for you: Get life insurance because you are killing yourself faster than ever. Even if you have a darker complexion, keeping safe from sunrays should still be a part of your life. This will not only lower your chances of being diagnosed with skin cancer but it will also help you to keep your skin healthy. No one likes the white stain that sunscreen can leave behind, so I have a much better product. Dior Capture Totale Multi-Perfection UVB Base SPF 50 works to protect against the sun, and the moisturizer provides an added glow.
