We can spend an unreasonable amount of time discussing the difference between two sandalwoods. Or the strange citrus note hiding inside elemi. Or why jasmine sambac behaves completely differently once it meets warm skin. Occupational hazard.

Coup de Courage gives those materials room to behave like themselves. Elemi and frankincense open the natural perfume; jasmine sambac and ylang ylang form its floral heart; labdanum, sandalwood and vanilla create the warm, resinous base. Our approach to niche fragrance begins with that materiality. We want to smell the ingredients, their irregularities included, rather than polish them into anonymity.

That philosophy has found its way into Vogue France, the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and more. The nicest part is that it still begins exactly where it always did: at the perfume table, deciding whether the sandalwood needs just a little more of something.

Not every floral needs to smell sunny. Some flowers are much more interesting beneath grey skies.

Envie Desoir places rose and violet against cool orris, aromatic angelica seed and bright bergamot before softening into sandalwood and ambrette. The natural perfume has floral richness without much sweetness, making it a niche fragrance for anyone who likes their flowers slightly shadowed.

Our natural perfumery has been featured in Vogue France, the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and more. We have apparently built something of a reputation for refusing to leave beautiful ingredients alone.

There are certain things in New York that become more interesting precisely because you’re not supposed to know about them.

The restaurant with no sign. The apartment behind the unmarked door. The person who somehow never appears in anyone’s photos.

October 11 has a little of that energy.

The Moon moves into Scorpio today and later squares Pluto, which can make us more private, more observant, and perhaps a little suspicious of anything that reveals itself too easily.

Normally, I’m all for getting the information.

But I’ve started to wonder whether knowing everything immediately has actually made anything more interesting.

Perfume certainly doesn’t work that way. The fragrances I remember aren’t the ones that introduce every ingredient in the first thirty seconds. They’re the ones that keep something back. You catch the rose later. The leather even later. And hours afterward, there’s still something on the skin you can’t quite name.

Old New York understood this too. There were private dining rooms, side entrances, unpublished telephone numbers. You could know someone for years and still not know everything about them.

Maybe that wasn’t always such a bad thing.

Because with the Moon in Scorpio today, I keep coming back to one question:

When did mystery become something we were supposed to solve?

Lavender has an unfortunate reputation for being sensible. Linen cupboards. Soap. Very good grandmothers. We thought it deserved a more interesting evening.

In Hollywoodland, lavender absolute meets Rose de Mai, neroli and ylang ylang, with green mandarin bringing brightness around the edges. Vanilla Bourbon, elemi and patchouli warm the base of the natural perfume. It is lavender recast as something lush, sensual and surprisingly glamorous—a niche fragrance far removed from anything remotely spa-like.

Our fragrances have been featured by Vogue France, the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and more. We remain firmly in favor of giving familiar ingredients better roles.

I’ve always been suspicious of anything that looks too perfectly balanced.

A relationship where nobody ever argues. An apartment where nothing is out of place. A dinner where everyone keeps saying how lovely everything is.

Because usually, somewhere underneath all that harmony, somebody wants something they’re not saying.

October 10 feels a little like that.

There’s a New Moon in Libra today, which sounds very civilized. Fresh starts. Partnership. Beauty. Compromise.

But Venus is retrograde in Scorpio and squaring Mars in Leo, which makes the whole thing considerably less polite.

Suddenly it’s not just, “Can we meet in the middle?”

It’s, “Wait. What do I actually want?”

And I think that’s a much harder question.

New York is full of beautiful arrangements that only work because someone agreed to the terms. The rent-stabilized apartment with the terrible kitchen. The impossible reservation that requires dinner at 5:15. The relationship where you’ve somehow become the person who always crosses town.

Perfume isn’t much different. You can have the most beautiful rose, the rarest sandalwood, the perfect jasmine — but eventually somebody has to decide how much of each one gets to stay.

Maybe balance isn’t about making everything equal.

Maybe it’s about noticing what you’ve been quietly giving too much of yourself to.

So before you agree to anything today, I’d ask:

Do I actually like the arrangement?

Angelica seed is one of the quieter characters in Envie Desoir, but take it away and the whole thing changes. It brings a cool, green, slightly musky quality that keeps the flowers from becoming too well behaved.

Alongside bergamot, it opens a natural perfume built around rose, violet and powdery orris. Sandalwood and ambrette soften the base, creating a niche floral fragrance that moves from fresh and botanical to warm and skin-like over time.

Our perfumes have been featured by Vogue France, the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and more. A good fragrance often depends just as much on the ingredients you cannot immediately identify as the ones you can.

Late at night, the city smells different.
Less sharp. More human. A mix of rain, metal, and someone’s garden watered after dark.
I stepped outside and let that air move through me, thinking about how close bodies can be without touching, how heat lingers even after people leave.
In the garden, warmth stays in the soil long after the sun is gone.
In the city, it lingers in stairwells, in elevators, in the space where someone just stood.
Some heat does not cool easily.
And maybe it is not meant to.

I’ve always thought New Yorkers have a very specific relationship with politeness.

We’ll hold the elevator, say “no, you first,” smile through dinner—and then spend the entire cab ride home explaining exactly why we’re furious.

October 9 feels a little like that.

The Moon moves into Libra today, which naturally wants things to be pleasant, balanced, civilized.

But Mercury in Scorpio is making an awkward aspect to Saturn in Aries, and later the Moon opposes Saturn too.

So beneath all that “of course, totally fine,” there may be a very different conversation happening.

And I think that’s the interesting part.

Because sometimes we call something harmony when what we really mean is that nobody has said the uncomfortable thing yet.

Perfume can be deceptive that way too. A formula can seem perfectly smooth until one darker note starts pushing through—something smoky, bitter, leathery—and suddenly you realize that was the part giving it character all along.

Maybe relationships work the same way.

Maybe agreement isn’t always the goal.

Maybe sometimes the useful moment is the one where someone finally stops being agreeable enough to tell the truth.

So today, I’d keep the manners.

I’d just pay attention to what’s hiding beneath them.

An old silver compact. A vase of roses beginning to open. Rain against a hotel window. None of these things actually appear in Envie Desoir, of course, but perfume is very good at making objects appear where there are none.

Rose, violet and orris give this natural fragrance its powdery floral center, with bergamot and angelica seed above and sandalwood and ambrette beneath. It has some of the elegance associated with classic French perfume, interpreted through the more intimate, textural language we love in contemporary niche fragrance.

Our perfumes have been featured in Vogue France, the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal and more. We have always liked fragrance best when it leaves a little room for the imagination.

I have a bad habit of assuming that if I can see what’s wrong with something, I’m somehow obligated to fix it.

The crooked picture frame. The awkward sentence. The relationship dynamic nobody asked me to diagnose.

October 8 feels a little like that.

The Moon is still in Virgo today, which is wonderful for noticing details and considerably less wonderful for knowing when to stop noticing them.

And I think that’s the trap.

Because sometimes the thing that bothers you is actually the thing giving something character.

New York would be unbearable if every old building had been corrected into perfection. Half the charm is in the strange proportions, the worn brass, the lobby tile somebody would definitely replace if they were renovating it now.

Perfume works the same way. Some of the best formulas have one note that feels almost wrong at first — too bitter, too smoky, too dry — until you realize removing it would make the whole thing flatter.

Maybe not everything that irritates us needs improvement.

Maybe some things just need a little distance.

So before you edit, correct, reorganize, rewrite, or “just make one small adjustment” today, I’d ask:

Is this actually a flaw?

Or is it just the part I haven’t learned to like yet?
