At just 17 years old, Mary, Queen of Scots was forced to abdicate the throne on this day in 1567, making way for her one-year-old son James VI to ascend as the new ruler. As the great-granddaughter of Henry VII of England, she had once claimed the throne of Elizabeth I as her own, however, this claim was met with resistance and caused Elizabeth to perceive Mary as a threat.
Consequently, Mary endured a life of captivity, confined to various castles and manor houses in England for eighteen and a half years. Eventually, in 1586, she was found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth, leading to her tragic beheading the following year at Fotheringhay Castle. Despite her tumultuous life, Mary's story has since become a beloved and romanticized tale in popular culture.

In the world of cinema, Mary has been brought to life by remarkable actors. Katharine Hepburn portrayed her in the 1936 film "Mary of Scotland," with Mel Berns as the talented makeup artist and Louise Sloane as the skilled hair stylist for Ms. Hepburn.

More recently, in 2018, Saoirse Ronan portrayed Mary in "Mary Queen of Scots," starring alongside Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I. The film boasted an impressive team of over 50 individuals in the hair and makeup department, including skilled wig makers and special makeup effects artists.
