Whenever someone becomes the target of public bullying, there is always a group of people encouraging the same response: be quiet, be classy, rise above it.
The advice is often given with good intentions, but it can carry a dangerous message beneath the surface. It teaches people that dignity is measured by silence. It teaches people that the more they are attacked, the less they should say.
It teaches people that appearing composed matters more than defending the truth.
I disagree.
There is a difference between refusing to engage in every argument and refusing to defend yourself. There is a difference between maintaining your dignity and surrendering your voice.
When someone is being publicly misrepresented, mocked, harassed, or lied about, they are not simply dealing with criticism. They are often watching reality become distorted in real time.
They know what happened. They know what did not happen. Yet they are expected to sit quietly while others tell their story for them.
That expectation creates a unique kind of psychological strain.
The truth remains trapped.
The accusations continue moving.
The pressure builds.
And then, when the person finally speaks, the attention shifts to their reaction rather than the behavior that made the reaction necessary.

Why am I more uncomfortable with their defense than I am with the behavior that made it necessary?
And if you genuinely believe an injustice is taking place, do more than observe it.
Stand up.
Speak up.
Support the truth.
Because the burden of responding to injustice should never fall entirely on the person enduring it.
