The United States House of Representatives passed the SAVE America Act on Wednesday in a 218–213 vote.

The bill, introduced by Chip Roy, would require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote and mandate photo ID for participation in federal elections. Supporters say the legislation is aimed at strengthening election security and voter confidence. Most Democrats voted against the measure, with Henry Cuellar being the only Democrat to vote in favor.

The updated version of the SAVE Act would also increase coordination between state election officials and federal agencies to verify voter eligibility.

Republicans argue the bill is necessary to ensure only eligible citizens vote in federal elections. Democrats have expressed concerns that the new requirements could create barriers for some eligible voters.

The legislation now heads to the Senate, where it would need additional support to advance.
