A simple 3-step skincare routine made just for you. 🌟

01/01/2022

Well, that’s it! This is our very last Atolla Instagram post 💔

Atolla started as an idea in 2018, which then grew into a nationwide brand with close to 200,000 completed skin tests and over 2 million data points, teaching us so much about skin. While these numbers make us proud, nothing compares to having helped so many of you feel more confident in your skin every day.

We want to thank each and everyone one of you for your support over the last 2 ½ years. It’s been an incredible journey with the most amazing community. I started Atolla as a grad student with sensitive skin and realized that I could leverage data science to help many others facing the same problem of putting together the right routine.

Now, Atolla’s mission, products, and technology will live on with an industry-leading company, Function of Beauty, that shares the same vision to help people live their best skin. Soon, Function of Beauty will launch a new skincare offering that has many of the elements you know and love from Atolla!

Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for believing in us and supporting us on this journey.

We’ll see you soon over at !

Your serum is one of the first steps in your routine, and a face oil is one of the last... but why do these two prodcuts keep getting confused with one another?

While the end goal of aiding overall skin health is the same - these two products coulnd’t be more different. In short: a serum has much smaller mollecule sizes to correct and fix skin concerns, where as a face oil’s larger mollecules help to seal and lock everything in.

The key difference is that a serum has a much higher concentrate of primary ingredients. While you can have a serum that is oil-based and feels oily, this doesn’t mean it’s any less effectice. While a water-based serum will absorb into the skin faster, the penetrative ability is still the same. There are some key ingredients such as retinol and vitamin C that love to live in oil-based serums! Happy ingredients = happy skin.

If you find your Atolla serum feels a little too oily, you’re welcome to change your texture preference in your skin profile. Head to the link in our bio!

These days there are hundreds of beneficial ingredients available to add into our at-home skincare routine. While having all these options might seem like a dream, it can often lead to overdoing it when it comes to putting together a routine.

According to our research, 1 in 2 people are using products with ingredients that can cause negative effects when layered together. These interactions, in addition to other common “skin sins,” can contribute to skin barrier damage, resulting in dry, irritated skin. Swipe to read through the most common skincare mistakes, with tips on how to avoid them and keep your complexion glowing. 👉

We often hear about Vitamin C being a fussy ingredient, but what does that actually mean?

While Vitamin C it is proven to be efficacious, it is a highly unstable ingredient that can cause irritation or lose potency at high doses. Additionally, vitamin C doesn’t pe*****te the skin easily, it degrades on exposure to oxygen and UV, and it favors a PH of around three - which is far too acidic fo human skin. Talk about high maintenance!

IT VITAMIN C WORTH THE FUSS?
Short answer: Absolutely. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and fine lines by supporting collagen synthesis and DNA repair from sun damage. This is a popular ingredient for us, as it can help work against the signs of sun damage as well as improve skin texture and glow. Its ability to support collagen synthesis can also make Vitamin C effective in reducing the appearance of scars and wounds, and as an anti-inflammatory agent, it can be helpful in managing breakouts.

WHAT IT WORKS WELL WITH:
Vitamin C works synergistically with Sunscreen and other antioxidants (such as Ferulic Acid, Vitamin E) to provide additional photo protection from the sun's harmful rays.

IS VITAMIN C IN MY ATOLLA ROUTINE?
Depending on your skins needs, vitamin C can definitely appear in your custom formula. In our formulas we use two different types of Vitamin C in our complexes: 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid and Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate. Atolla’s formulas are made-to-order, designed for a one-month use, meaning less exposure to oxygen and sunlight for the tricky Vitamin C to throw a tantrum.

Meet thrifting queen, body positivity advocate, and loyal Atlla member: !

A little bit more about Justyn, in her words:

How long does it take to see results from your skincare product? The answer is "it depends" on the ingredients, the skin concern you're trying to treat, and your unique skin.

This isn't a comprehensive list, but includes many of the skin concerns and some of the principal ingredients we use at Atolla. There may be other ingredients that are a good fit for you based on your specific skin sensitivities, history, and routine. Rather than focussing on one key ingredient in your Atolla Custom Serum, Custom Cleanser, and Custom Moisturizer... we build complex formulas with ingredients that support each other in one simple serum, moisturizer, and cleanser.

The most important thing you can do to see results is stay consistent! This chart assumes the use of each ingredient once a day.

Results of course vary by each person, which is where personalization can play a huge role. Your skin is not going to respond the same as someone else's skin. Depending on how you are progressing, your custom formula may dial the amount of an ingredient up or down to maximize results and minimize irritation.

Thank you to our wonderful co-founder for assisting in compiling!

What is prickly pear extract?

This cactus extract contains healthy compounds and oils such as antioxidants, omega-6 fatty acid and vitamin E, which help nourish the skin and support a better protective barrier.

Another key component of this ingredient is phytosterols, which can help to support collagen synthesis. Prickly pear can also be very hydrating and support cell turnover.

A super power ingredient derived from tree bark that helps treat pigmentation, sun damage, and dark spots!

WHAT IT IS: Extracted from the tree bark of Chilean Boldo trees, this is an antioxidant that helps treat excess pigmentation concerns by inhibiting Tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for melanin production.

SKIN CONDITIONS IT TARGETS: Discoloration / Dark spots + Sun Damage

Diacetyl Boldine is a lesser-known ingredient for pigmentation concerns compared to popular active ingredients like Vitamin C, Hydroquinone, and Lactic Acid. It can be found in various serums, moisturizers, and exfoliants. Head to the link in our bio to take the Skin Assessment, and see if Diacetyl Boldine is right for your skin!
