Receiving the Vanguard Self-Care Award caused me to reflect on something I’ve learned over 30 years in the beauty industry.
As hairstylists, we place a mirror in front of our clients so they can see the finished result. But the amazing thing is, we’ve never actually seen ourselves, only a reflection.
That’s why I’ve become so passionate about soul care. While we can help enhance what people see on the outside, true beauty begins within. The way we see ourselves, the value we believe we have, and the condition of our hearts often become reflected in our lives.
Self-care is important, but for me, self-care starts with soul care. My desire has always been to help people see the beauty, worth, and purpose that already exists within them.

I had to do that here at Salon Santee with these plants. And it’s amazing, the moment I cut away what was dead, everything looked greener, healthier, and alive again.
